I have a bin Laden/Saddam/Saudi/Bush/9-11 Question
Where can I find some information about the Saudis' relationship to Saddam Hussein pre-invasion, and how it may have benefitted the Saudis for George to invade Iraq? I'm trying to put together the pieces from Fahrenheit 9/11.

If anybody has links where I can find really good information about why Bush might have invaded Iraq in detail I'd love to have it. I've got some rightwingers on another message board who I'd like to present it to. Thanks!!

1. Try...
http://www.cooperativeresearch.org

Lots of background information in the pre-9/11 timeline.

In general, the Saudis weren't particularly nervous about Hussein after the first Gulf war. His military capability was badly damaged, and the sanctions took a big toll. And, Hussein owed the Saudis a lot of money (which they loaned him from their oil proceeds) from the Iran-Iraq war. And, we established permanent bases in SA, so, in effect, the Saudis had our military support.

If the invasion benefitted the Saudis in any way, it was the loss of oil from Iraq. They and the rest of OPEC could bring prices up to a new shelf--which has been done--because of the creation of new current-market artificial shortages.

June 3, 1997

American foreign and defense policy is adrift. Conservatives have criticized the incoherent policies of the Clinton Administration. They have also resisted isolationist impulses from within their own ranks. But conservatives have not confidently advanced a strategic vision of America's role in the world. They have not set forth guiding principles for American foreign policy. They have allowed differences over tactics to obscure potential agreement on strategic objectives. And they have not fought for a defense budget that would maintain American security and advance American interests in the new century.

We aim to change this. We aim to make the case and rally support for American global leadership.

As the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world's preeminent power. Having led the West to victory in the Cold War, America faces an opportunity and a challenge: Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievements of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests?

5. The invasion of Iraq was planned before the inauguration
The neo-Cons wanted to erase the Bush vs. Saddam I failing from the record books. Ousting Saddam and a triumphant tail hook landing were also pre planned. When Osama got in the middle of things, he really screwed up Bush's plan, so they had to make up the Saddam/al Qaeda "connection" lies. Apparently, they thought we would fall for it.
