Bush says grid outdated, where was he during the California crisis?
Why is he willing to get involved now yet stood by and laughed at California when we had our problems? Cheney and Enron raped California and these guys did NOTHING!!!

The Bushies talked about taking property across the
country to put up a national grid system...I don't
trust anything they want to do...

Fundraising while millions of Americans are without power--I heard 18% of the American population?

Plus, he lobbied AGAINST a bill updating that power grid in 2001.

Plus, did Cheney discuss said power grid in his secret energy meetings?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm already writing letters to my local papers.

4. I didn't pay much attention to the California thing
I think I was out at school, so I didn't take in much news. What happened? Was is as big (or bigger?) than what happened yesterday? I didn't know we had the kind of problems... The only electric problems we've had at my house were when we were w/o electricity for a couple hours when a transformer blew up. (And once during a storm...)

7. California and the whole West Coast
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 06:25 PM by CarlBallard
Had a power shortage when California deregulated it's power (it went into effect in spring 2001 or thereabouts). In California there were "rolling blackouts" similar to what's happening now in the East Coast (although it lasted longer, and didn't start with the same bang that happend in the East). Across the region energy prices rose gretly and still haven't come back to where they were.

Davis as well as my governor (Gary Locke) and many Senators and Congressmen and women begged the regulatory commission in charge of Energy (FERC- The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission I think) to impose price caps. It took many months and eventually they did, but by that time the states had bought long term contracts at the higher prices. Later it was found that Enron and others had manipulated the process, although leftys had been screaming that for a year. Krugman has a pretty good (although much more wonkish than his NYT articles)overview of the economics that could lead to that sort of shinanigans.
