What Randi has had to go thru....
to get(back)to NYC.Do you guys know she had a psycho stalker that forced her to have Jimmy in studio with here a couple of times? This guy scared her ,and I remember him calling her back right before the 2002 elections. She has paid a big price to do what she does and does so well.

1. She also fought hard to get AAR started. But some here are rabid
because once she said to st Ralph: "We cannot afford you this year"
geez, I was hoping she'd bring up the GOP money and his buddy Norquist. But that was ebough to get the fringes from the left and right barking at her in unison.

2. I heard her interview with Darth Nader
I never associated "afford" with a money thing, if that's what you mean. She was talking vote wise.

It was my first introduction to Randi Rhodes, and it sold me on her. She's an awesome lady. I've heard her say several times she has gotten e-mails from someone saying they want to put her up against a wall and shoot her. Alan Colmes gets mail like this too.

She was so on cue with Nader, I can't believe anyone would complain. She so put him in his place, and he NEEDED to hear everyword. She has done this to Ollie North to. I can't believe anyone would dis Randi for this, but you know what they say, a prophet is never recognized in their own country.

5. I agree - she said all the right things. I could have taken more -
but I see here and elsewhere a lot of vicious Randi bashing. Ralphie fans, freepers, and insecure guys. I adore her - wear her T-shirt with pride!

10. I loved it!
It was the first day for AAR and I fell in love with her right there and then.

20. Here ya go,
http://www.mediatransparency.org/people/grover_norquist.htm

Grover Glenn Norquist (born Oct. 19, 1956), a well-connected Republican activist with close ties to business and the media, is one of the "Gang of Five" in Nina Easton's 2000 book by that name, giving the history of leaders of the modern conservative movement. He has been described as "a thumb-in-the-eye radical rightist" (The Nation), and "Tom Paine crossed with Lee Atwater plus just a soupcon of Madame Defarge" (P.J. O'Rourke). Norquist is famous for his widely quoted comment that he wants to shrink government “down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.” He is considered to be a simplistic thinker in that he sees the world only in terms of good and evil without there being any gray areas. The pledge of "no new taxes" that so many Republican legislators signed was his project. He holds regular meetings for conservative leaders in which strategy is discussed. He once commented, "We play for keeps; they play for lunch."

3. she is far braver than Franken who is contemplating running for some
senatorial office or other and already is playing the politics game.

Randi is unique and kisses no one's ass as far as I can see and compare to Franken--who many times seems to be playing the politics game.

That is fine if he wants to run for office somewhere, but if he does he certainly seems to have grasped what it takes to run for office and that is to take NO absolute or firm position on anything on any position, right or left, and to compliment, actually, those on the other side.

I , personally ,do not admire that on a radio show host, and definately not in any politician, but in that arena, we are expected to adore them, or a Franken who plays that game.

I do not. and I will not.

4. Not a matter of bravery.
In my opinion, Franken is more interested in actually trying to make a difference rather than preach to the choir.

I do respect what Rhodes does, but at the end of the day I believe that Franken's approach is more effective.

6. More freepers pay attention to Randi than to Franken. They call
and enjoy getting beaten up sick puppies that they are. I am sure Randi is more effective than Franken who allows his freeper friend make such unchallenged points as "the rich are entitled to their riches"
He is probably making a difference on some other segment of the population than Randi. But when I hear the freeper segment I usually turn off. For the same reasons I stopped watching Crossfire a long time ago.

16. Eyes on the Prize...
I think you sell yourself short when you ignore those kinds of segments.

It pays to try to understand what a significant portion of Americans think. Even if you disagree with them. Especially if you disagree with them. Its one of the ways that I believe the progressive movement is superior to modern conservatism.

That doesn't mean we don't argue with them, far from it.

7. well you are entitled to your opinion but I have turned off his show
Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 05:47 PM by Marianne
every day since the firtst day. I wanted to believe in him.

I have turned him off because he likes to talk about himself too much, because Katherine has assumed the role of a Franken shill without any opinion of her own and because he is simply fawning toward the opposition in an effort to be middle of the road and a good politician. It comes off as fawning.

I just have lost interest in his show.

I do not listen much any more and prefer to tune in to Thom Hartman, who is much more believable and honest and far more informed on the issues of the day than Franken.

Franken is out to make a name for himself--he loves himself and promotes himself, although he has nothing unusual in the field to contribute to the issues we face-Nothing-Katherine supports his love for himself by fawning to him and coming off as his mommy protectorate.

He is contemplating running for some congressional office--ergo he is already bought and paid for and using that mode on his show. He has not made an independant name for himself--he is too concerned about how he will come off in the field of public opinion, and not willing to take a stand that would, actually , distinguish himself as a man with a firm committment because he values his Republican connections and friends.

He is, to be frank, playing the politics game.

Playing the game to promote himself because he loves himself too much.

He is NOT brave--he is an advertiser for himself, and he does not have a real progressive view to promote.

8. I'm the opposite
I've turned off Randi's show every day since AAR started. I admire her, and I like the fact that she is on AAR, and I think she is important, but I find Al's show much, much more entertaining.

I just find Randi too shrill and obnoxious for my tastes, even though politically I agree with her on most points.

My point is that both Al and Randi are serving the cause by doing what they both do best, appealling to a broad spectrum of the left.

9. Probably--LOL

but we should be able to parse it intelligently according to our perceptions.

In my opinion, Franken is manipulating and constrained because he seeks office, possibly, in the future, and does not want to say anything that may cause that effort to fail.

And that is what makes him less believable and less on our side.

18. I don't see that in Franken
My perception of him is quite different than yours. I see him as honest, passionate and tactful. I think he is completely on our side, but that is a VERY large and diverse "side." I think Al is incredibly civil, much more so than I would probably be if I were in his place. He is also articulate, informed and funny. I hope he does run and I hope he wins because America needs senators like Al Franken.

11. You REALLY don't like him, do you?
Did Al Franken steal your lunch money while you were at summer camp together or something?

What you view as his concern about public opinion I view as a mature acknowlegement that nealy half the country votes for Republicans. We ignore/mock those regular Americans at our own peril.

Personally, I don't want someone who only preaches to the choir. All we get when we do that is an echo chamber, much like what Rush and Hannity et al. have on a daily basis. I don't want that.

14. No , I knew nothing about him. I tuned in every day and every day
I tuned out because it was boring listening to him promote himself.

I really do tune in every day , hoping it was just birth pangs and there would be an improvement

I do it to this day and to this day, tune it out and tune in Hartman

Honest--He turns me off after all this hope I invested in him and in Katherine.

What can I say- I think his show is boring.

17. His job is not to be concerned about THAT half of the country - but
get everyone with a brain to vote their interest.
I actually listen to him - parts of the shows are good (debunking of lies) and he has good guests (Conason, Brock et al). I wish he'd realize that it's not just Faux /Limpballs that re[present what's wrong with the media. But it's OK that he debunks them.

19. I absolutely disagree.
We should ALL be concerned with "THAT half of the country". They're half the country for God's sake!

Not all people that vote Republicans are evil billionaires. People can and do have honest disagreements about political philosophy. Its our job to make the best case we can for progressive liberalism, not just pat each other on the back.
