1. Is the Pope Polish?
Of course Karl will. He won't be able to resist it. The problem is, he's going to have to do it in a way that * won't suffer by comparison to the Gipper. Nearly impossible.

8. of course he will.
reagan was the quintessential conservative in most americans eyes, and much of Bush's base gets a warm fuzzy feeling when they think of Reagan Country and the Revolution.

9. I don't know
I'm sure Imperial Wizard KKKarl would have preferred an October death, or perhaps closer to the RNC Convention, but this will have to do. Also, I think Nancy, Ron Jr. and Patti will put strict limitations on how far Rove can go with such comparisons. I think the bigger concern is that Kerry is effectively out of the spotlight for a week, but then again all Bush will have is his funeral speech, and we know how well his speeches go. Kerry may want to announce the VP choice a week from Monday or Tuesday. Then Clinton's book comes out; then comes Farenheight 9/11. The Iraqi "handover" on June 30 is a question mark.

10. ANALYSIS: Bush follows the Gipper's playbook
ANALYSIS: Bush follows the Gipper's playbook

By DAVID WESTPHAL, McClatchy Washington Bureau Chief

WASHINGTON (June 6, 4:52 pm PDT) - Although he may not speak of his presidency in this way, George W. Bush is following a course that seems taken directly from the Ol' Gipper's playbook.

Bush's military build-up, his big tax cuts, his acceptance of record federal deficits and his conservative social agenda are the precise hallmarks that also defined the two-term presidency of Ronald Reagan, who died Saturday at age 93.

In ways stylistic as well as substantive, Bush has fashioned a presidency that tracks not his father's, but that of his father's predecessor, the 40th president of the United States.

Both men came to office favoring a corporate, hands-off management style. Both set regular business hours and hit the sack early. Both fled Washington whenever they could, trading business suits for jeans and cowboy hats on their respective ranches.

snip...
"I think President George W. Bush has patterned some of his presidency on the presidency of Ronald Reagan," James Baker, Reagan's former chief of Staff, said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

snip...
"George W. Bush has governed as if it were the third term of Ronald Reagan's presidency," conservative leader Grover Norquist told the Washington Post.

16. There can be no repeat of the Reagan presidency
The Bush butt kissers will try, but they will fail, as history is not on their side. LBJ sought to model his presidency after FDR, matching and even exceeding his administration, only to see it disentigrate in 1968.

We are today, I think at the peak of the Reagan Revolution. All the pieces are now in place, ready to begin disentigrating. Much like the 1960's were the peak of liberalism, liberalism also began its slow but certain demise with the election of 1968. The Reagan Revolution had great populist appeal so long as its advocates were out of power: establishmentarians have a hard time creating real revolutions. When you are the governing party you can talk about revolution and challenging established institutions all you want, but at a certain point it becomes timeworn and disingenuous rhetoric. What revolution? It's either over or they blew it, because now they are custodians of the state, maintaining a political order that has existed now for over 23 years (perhaps Clinton was just playing the same role Eisenhower played vis a vis the New Deal order during the 1950's).

Bush may win this November. He may limp to victory or he may yet win a convincing victory. But by 2008 I promise you his Administration will be in absolute ruins. Most second term presidencies are not particularly successfull anyway, and a lot of problems build up over 4-8 years that leave the American public in a mood for change by the next election.

14. No. Not a chance.
The guy has way too much character for that. He would never sink so low. People on DU have a low opinion of him, but believe me, you'll hear the other side of the story very soon .... when he is on trial for a federal offense involving exposing a CIA agent's identity because he was pissed that her husband exposed him/cheney/bush as lying bastards, who would send thousands of people to their deaths in Iraq for control of oil supplies. But would he try to capitalize on reagan? Gosh, never.

19. Rove can't Use the Carrier Landing so he Better Juice the Gipper
Rove better juice the Gipper for all he was worth, which fortunately wasn't much. How ironic that Bush's aircraft landing, that he was so proud of, is worthless now because Iraq is anything but "Mission Accomplished!" What an ass!
