Recommended reading: this month's issue of Harper's (again)
This magazine is consistently excellent.

This month we have a report from a Canadian who spent a year visiting a family involved with the Iraqi insurgents, as well one by Scott Ritter on how the Bushies suddenly declared that a pilot who had almost certainly been killed when his plane was shot down during the Gulf War was still alive and a prisoner of Saddam Hussein, and others about the use of private contractors by the military and how CIA attempts to fund Islamicists as a counterpoint to Nasser's Arab nationalism led indirectly to the rise of radical Islamic movements. There is also an article explaining the philosophy of Leo Strauss, one of the prime inspirations for tne neocons.

My subscription was only $12 a year, but it's worth every penny. Unfortunately, it's not on line.

1. Big time agree
there are many heads up moments in this months issue,

but the article on the fallujah insurgency made me realize how little everybody (and by that I mean the US public, the admin, the press, the military, and even myself and other DUers) understands about the situation on the ground in Iraq with the insurgency...truly eye-opening, behind-the scenes reporting. The descriptions where he describes being informed of the "operations" that will take place the next day, and then reports on them are chilling to me...

the article on strauss was pretty heady(philosophical), a twice reader

4. I cancelled my Newsweek subscription and . . .
subscribed to Harper's and The Nation instead . . . what a difference! . . . I now get real news and thoughtful commentary instead of this week's corporate talking points . . .

5. Harpers used to have much more material online
about like The Nation, but alas. No more. They also had great message boards for a while back around 1997, with a lot of diverse and literate people posting.

Needless to say, I was disappointed when they phased those out. :(

9. Yes, that's another of my new subscriptions
It's a bit dryer than Harper's, but full of good analyses of the current political scene.

8. The Canadian's story on the Fallujah insurgency puts the lie to
Bush's claims about the Iraqi people supporting the US.
