My friends, Kevin and Sheryl, are dedicated Democrats but both sets of parents are staunch Republicans in a fundy church. They have also had the Alex P. Keaton syndrome with their son, who grew up to be a Republican and subsequently his wife also. Last week Sheryl told me that her son and her parents are now anti-Bush. She went to the in-laws this weekend and discovered they have turned anti-Bush also. She said she does not know if they will actually vote for Kerry but they won't vote for Bush and may just stay home (which is okay with me). We thought this turn of events combined with the cicada infestation is probably a sign of the end times.
Last week I encountered a friend from some years back in the grocery store. Our sons are the same age and I knew hers had joined the military a couple of years ago. I had always known her to be Republican. Her son is now in Iraq. I asked her if she was able to sleep at night and she said he is in a part of Iraq where not much is happening and she hears from him quite often. I tried to do the diplomatic dance around political issues but didn't need to for long. She started by saying how the guys in her son's unit cannot figure why they are there and are pretty pissed off about the whole thing. She said she would be voting her opinion in the fall, along with her son and his unit. She then went on to say she told her husband that if he did not vote for Kerry they were getting separate bedrooms and she was serious. We then got into a long discussion and (in her words) ripped Bush a new asshole.
So, take heart. I think the faithful are falling away.
