Isn't it a bit unusual, from a security standpoint, for the Pentagon to announce the visit of a VIP to Baghdad while he's still there?

Doesn't this put him (as well as the poor smucks guarding him) at risk for mortor/rocket/sniper attacks?

Why was security violated here?

They've done it before; yeah it's a security risk, but the other side is that they want the publicity. In part because of the election and rummys troubles I'd guess, and in part, perhaps, because they want to create the illusion that they are taking the Abu Ghraib matter seriously.

At any rate, I'm guess their answer was that you have to balance the security concerns with the need to show that Rumsfeld is taking this seriously.
