Edited on Wed May-12-04 05:46 PM by mopaul
Meaning
The notion that for every wrong done there should be a compensating measure of justice.
Origin
From the Code of Hammurabi. Hammurabi was King of Babylon, 1792-1750BC. The code survives today in the Akkadian language. Used in The Bible, Matthew 5:38. 'Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth'.

7. Out of context to the max!
"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."

Jesus was contradicting the Old Testament.

and some people, like bush, not only take them out of context, the mock and subvert them. all the while claiming to be christians.

and i can't prove if it was that babylonian king who said it, or jesus, i wasn't there.

but my mom used to tell me, the second part of that passage, about turning the cheek. my headline is a stab at the bush's

3. finish the statement...
39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

context matters

5. thanks but I found it's age and origin oddly appropriate
a babylonian king said it, and the bible adopted it, like many other things from the babylonians. the first stanza is being enacted with a vengance, while the part you quoted is being ignored.

drop a nickle in the plate for DU

10. Thank you for completing the passage
The interpretation of this passage in my bible (NIV) says:

"God's purpose behind this law was an expression of mercy. The law was given to judges and said, in effect, "Make the punishment fit the crime." It was not a guide for personal revenge (Exodus 21:23-25; Leviticus 24: 19, 20; Deuteronomy 19:21). These laws were given to LIMIT vengeance and help the court administer punishment that was neither too strict nor too lenient. Some people, however, were using this phrase to justify their vendettas against others. People still try to excuse their acts of revenge by saying, "I was just doing to him what he did to me."

6. But follow up the Matthew quotation
Matthew 5:39-42
39. But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

40. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.

41. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

42. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

15. When Jesus said to love your enemies
I'm pretty sure he meant "don't kill them."

From the bumper sticker on the back of my car.

16. exactly
christians and muslims going all the way back before christianity have exacted revenge on one another. back to the times of the baylonians, people have been focusing on only the revenge part.

we are avenging 9-11 by killing 20,000 innocents in afghanistan and iraq. this ain't what jesus had in mind, and bush knows it, as thick as he is

17. Boy Howdy, What have you done, MoPaul! Quite the Firestorm!
I just stay with the universal "Do unto others" and turn the other cheek. Also is another verse about passing through the eye of a needle. That is one to really treasure. One other is something about a mustard seed. Love ya......

And what have we done to the cradle of civilization. Are you proud yet? As Americans we have brought destruction upon this world and it will come back on us. The blowback this time is going to be amazing.
