This will be a classic. Actually, the entire BD wounding series will be revisited over and over,IMO. GT nailed this one solidly.

6. This is the first time I've ever seen B.D. without a helmet on
When he was in school, it was a football helmet. When he volunteered to go to Vietnam to get out of taking a test in college (I can't remember the subject), he got his first military helmet.

Showing him without his helmet covering 80% of his face makes B.D. appear more vulnerable and human. It's a powerful storyline. Trudeau is walking a very fine line between tragedy and humor.

7. Great story about Doonsbury and the war
It's hard to say which was more startling Wednesday morning: the sight of "Doonesbury" character B.D. minus a leg - or minus his helmet.

As longtime fans of Garry Trudeau's popular comic strip know, B.D. has never, ever, been seen without a helmet of some kind - be it football, Army or motorcycle-cop variety. It's been his signature characteristic from the day he appeared in the first strip Trudeau ever drew back in 1968 when the cartoonist was still a student at Yale. That helmet is how fans - and I'm one - recognized him. It's as familiar a feature as Mike Doonesbury's wire-rims or Zonker's goatee
