The real difference between the wars in Vietnam and Iraq
With Vietnam, the party that got us involved actually had a conscience, was peopled with patriotic citizens, and the war split the party so badly that the Dems have yet to recover.

In the case of Iraq, however, the party that got us involved is filled with war-monger eno-cons, war profiteers and sheeple, who now gleefully embrace sacrificing our troops and wealth to free the world, because God has given us that mission. This war will not split the Republicans.

1. Heck, even half
the Democrats, easily, in Congress are still for it. I know my representative, Max Sandlin, still is.

2. Partisan bullshit
Read Secrets by Daniel Ellsberg if you want to know how much of a conscience all these "patriotic citizens" had. Then, explain to me how their "conscience" was exercised by continuing down a path that they knew was a dead-end from the get-go. Furthermore, explain to me how they exhibited their "patriotism" by weaving a tapestry of lies and deceit in order to justify our further involvement.

This war is already splitting a great number of Republicans from the party establishment. All of us on DU have spoken to Republicans that we know or encounter on the street who are not at all enthused at the current course of events.

This kind of black/white thinking, the childish and mistaken belief that our side is all good and their side is all bad, is part of what has made American politics the complete cesspool that it is today. Democrats engaging in it is no different than Republicans engaging in it.

Personally, I want no part of it.

4. When Kerry was in Vietnam risking his life
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 12:06 PM by kcwayne
Bush was back home snorting coke and pounding tequila shots.

When Bush was in Iraq serving plastic turkey on a photo-op, Kerry
was back home energizing a political base to throw the sorry SOB out of office.
