Barak Obama
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 04:56 PM by jiacinto
Question: how is he going to handle the inevitable ads that say

Barak Osama?

I like what he has to say so far. But I fear the negative ads that could be made about him.

1. Ill. just elected a governor named Blagojevich
I doubt the name will be an issue. Trust me, the main race here's gonna be the nomination, it's virtually a guaranteed pick-up. We shouldnt' get overly confident, we'll need to fight a good campaign in the fall, but as long as we run a competent campaign, that seat is ours, even w/ a guy whose name is Obama.

2. I was just wondering
I can see the GOP comparing to him OBL the way they did to Max Cleland.

5. I don't know
His record, at least what I've read of it, is REALLY good -- liberal, but moderate enough for Illinois voters, who are a very liberal, Democratic bunch as it is. He's racked up tons of accomplishments, and I really think the GOP's gonna have a very hard time keeping this seat. All their top candidates are gone, and while it'll be competitive, I think as long as we perform competently, which we will, I think we'll win the seat by something like 55-43, maybe more, like 58-41. I think we can be pretty sure that we'll pick this seat up, as long as we don't nominate a total loser -- which won't happen -- any of the top 4, Obama, Hynes, Blair Hull, or Maria Pappas, will be strong candidates, the issue is going to be the nomination. I like Obama b/c, while the others are great, esp. Hynes, I really think we need to promote more African-Americans to higher office when they're qualified -- Obama certainly is, and he should be the nominee for that reason. Hynes, esp., has plenty of time, he's only 36, he could easily be governor after Blagojevich, or seek Durbin's senate seat should he retire.

6. Illinois politic gets ugly, I grant you
But I just don't think that type of cheap shot would be very effective. There are too many minorities and recent immigrants here that making fun of someone's name or ethnicity wouldn't get very far.

3. Obama for Illinois
The printer I work for does quite a bit of work for him. He is a good guy and helps keep me employed. I don't think his name will be a problem here in Chicago.
