10. A lot of them
originally were socialists, thus the "neo." The term originally denoted a convert, but has since come to signify a specific governing philosophy.

6. Pat has said a lot of things I agree with since
The war started last year. He loathes the Bush family. I have no doubts on that.

15. You are so right
he does loathe the Bush family. I find myself secretly liking him (though I don't agree with a lot of what he says) because he does loathe them and was against the war in Iraq.

23. Buchanan scares me..He once said he would like to see Canada break
up and the United States could "pick up the parts they needed"....It was on a PBS panel show a few years ago...I remember Eleanor Clift was a panelist..When he said that, she said "maybe Canada wouldn't want to be picked up by us!"....I've always noticed he is strictly FOR THE U.S.A....He really doesn't care about what happens to other countries....He strikes me as being rather ruthless...

24. I didn't say I agreed with him on all things
but when your husband is in another country fighting a war you disagree with (as my husband was for 10 months), it is hard not to like a guy as against the war in Iraq as you are.

28. Of course....I understand how you feel
I didn't mean to be insensitive about that...You are right...He has been against the Iraq war from the beginning....I was just speaking as a Canadian with a different perspective on him....I hope your husband is alright....:loveya:

29. He's fine... he got home last week
just very, VERY skinny and with a few new scars.

And I understand being sensitive about Canada. I'm originally from North Dakota and am tired of people saying the state is worthless, pointless, and should be part of Canada (not that that is a bad thing, there are days I wish it was). I just wanted to make sure you knew I wasn't saying I agreed with EVERYTHING he said.

27. I agree
Nowadays, Buchanan says things I agree with sometimes. Like he says all these factories closing down in the Midwest, or textile plants closing down in North Carolina is a shame, which, of course, I agree with.

It was to a point where I was in the library and started reading one of his books, Right from the Beginning or something. Yikes! It jolted me back to reality and to what a nut he is. I guess for a conservative he speaks his mind and is more honest, so if he sees things going in a way he doesn't like he will speak out even if it might hurt Republicans or whoever. I think he feels that poor and working class people should be taken care of at SOME level, and the very real reality is that plenty of wealthy people around the world and in the US could really give a hoot. In Ocala, Florida recently, they found people working in more-or-less slavery (they had to work, and were not allowed to leave) recently. Imagine how things are in foreign-owned factories in places like Guatemala and Indonesia.

is moderate. Amazing to see the change in the RW political landscape.

5. It's amazing, isn't it?
With increased exposure for the likes of Coulter, Hannity, et al, Buchannan sounds relatively SANE! And he hasn't changed or mellowed, really, it's just that discourse has gotten so much uglier that even a whack-job like Pat sounds reasonable in comparison.

His analysis of neoconservatism is pretty damn astute, I must say - just keep him from talking about immigrants and jews...

I agree.......
I tend to find myself agreeing with him on other issues, then he goes into his immigration thing and he loses me.

Interestingly, Ive never gotten the feeling he hates liberals and wants us all executed or interned in a re-education camp like Hannity, Limpballs and O'Really.

26. And anyone not white, male and conservative:
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 07:20 PM by northofdenali
"In another memo from Buchanan to Nixon: "There is a legitimate grievance in my view of white working-class people that every time, on every issue, that the black militants loud-mouth it, we come up with more money.... If we can give 50 Phantoms to the Jews, and a multi-billion dollar welfare program for the blacks...why not help the Catholics save their collapsing school system." (Boston Globe, 1/4/92)"

"On AIDS, Buchanan wrote in 1983: "The poor homosexuals -- they have declared war upon nature, and now nature is extracting an awful retribution (AIDS)." (Los Angeles Times, 11/28/86) Later that year, he demanded that New York City Ed Koch and New York Gov. Mario Cuomo cancel the Gay Pride Parade or else "be held personally responsible for the spread of the AIDS plague." "With 80,000 dead of AIDS, our promiscuous homosexuals appear literally hell-bent on Satanism and suicide," Buchanan wrote in 1990 (syndicated column, 10/17/90). In the 1992 campaign, he declared: "AIDS is nature's retribution for violating the laws of nature." (Seattle Times, 7/31/93)"

The quotes from Buchanan on immigrants, any people of color, gays, Israel............downright disgusting.

For more, and believe me, I think Buchanan is articulate and is anti-Bush, but this is bad stuff :scared: http://www.fair.org/current/buchanan-bigot.html

But we've been saying all along that * isn't conservative.

Once * is gone, you'll find plenty to disagree with him again. I'm looking forward to the day.

19. He's an interesting character.
Pat got arrested as a young man for beating up a cop that was bugging him. I think his books are worth reading. It doesn't mean that you agree with him, but the guy is smart, far more honest than most of the right wing, and he has no respect for the bush family. There are obviously a lot of areas where I think he is way wrong, but I find him interesting. (His books are better than his tv act.)

21. Pat's protectionist stance IS appealing...
...he's always been anti-GATT/NAFTA. I get the feeling he really cares about working class Americans and includes them in his world view.
That said, his 'clash of civilizations' and racialist views don't sit well with me at all.
