Riordan "Stunned" by Friend, Aide Says
(as of Wed. morning when Dick Riordan and Ahhhnold talked, Dick
didn't have any idea that the terminator was going to run. Interesting decision making....)

Riordan "Stunned" by Friend, Aide Says
The ex-mayor didn't think Schwarzenegger intended to run, according to an advisor.
By James Rainey
Times Staff Writer

August 7, 2003

Among the many Californians amazed when Arnold Schwarzenegger entered the governor's race late Wednesday afternoon was the actor's Brentwood neighbor and friend, Richard Riordan, former mayor of Los Angeles.

Riordan was "stunned" when he learned from a television newscast that Schwarzenegger would challenge Gov. Gray Davis for the state's top post, according to one of Riordan's closest confidants. The two-term mayor believed Schwarzenegger had committed to sitting out the race, leaving Riordan free to run without contesting his friend, the confidant said.

Of the two, Riordan led in most polls. As late as Wednesday morning, he had spoken to Schwarzenegger and gotten no inkling that the movie hero was about to announce his first run for public office — taking the plunge in a "Tonight Show" appearance with host Jay Leno.

"So this is what it feels like to be mugged," said the Riordan advisor, who asked not to be named.

1. I was also really surprised by Schwarzenegger's
decision, I didn't think for a moment that he was really serious about a gubernatorial candidacy.

4. So the "terminator" lies to his friends
I guess it is time to welcome arny to the political world.

Just last night on a late night show I heard some talking head spouting off about how Rirdan must have urged AS (his middle name isn't Sam by any chance) to run.

I wonder if they will change their tune.

16. Arnold showed how cunning he is last night on Leno when he announced
he was a candidate. He cleverly threw in the statement that "of course now you will be hearing all kinds of stories about me...that I'm a womanizer"....How cunning of him...He can now say, when his past peccadillos are brought up that he warned us there would be people making up stories about him....Did anyone else notice him saying this last night?....It made me realize how calculating he is. The link to this article I got from another thread, and it shows why the Republicans might not be too happy to have him representing their party...I'm sure all this stuff will come out....

Anybody know how that bag of _____ is polling against Arnold?

LOL....how much money did Issa spend to buy himself the Governorship?

The "Law of Unforseen Csonsequences" is playing out vividly in California!

8. If a G DAMN Repug had to win..
I would have chosen Riodan. He is a professional, (acts that way two), articulate, and has great ideas.
Besides do we really want the Repugs to use Arnold to prop up their party??? I can see it now, they will try to get people to vote for them (young voters) by using this BIMBO!

20. I agree. I actually sorta like Riordan
about as much as I can like a Republican.

He's always seemed like an honest, hard working guy.

He was a whole lot better than Bradley

9. Ahhhnold said he was going to "make decisions for the people"
Ahhhnold forgets that there is a legislature full of Dems,
Sec. of State, Controller, AG etc. who are all Dems. The
best a Republican can do up there in two years is find the best Mexican food restaurant in Carmichael.

11. Which people, Ahnold???
He is a disgrace.

The deceased Kennedys must be rolling over in their graves -- and the ones alive must be abuzz about what a dumbshit that Maria was to marry such a doofus. Or they should be.

12. I give Ahhhnold credit
for being a successful actor, but he has no experience
running government offices...would these people be plumbers
tomorrow?

Being governor the the 5th (was) largest economy
in the world takes experience. Having name recognition is
the easy part.

14. This recall...
...is such a joke. And Arnie's lil PR scam is just silly shit. He's trying to frame himself as a moderate, but his chit chat with Karl Rove highlights the lie of that sales point. Such a damned circus...

15. Ahhhhhnald, Kobe and the gay Bishop....oh my!
What next to take the focus off of the bushco lies and deception parade.

I, too, am rather shocked that this POS thinks he can run the state of CA. By whose logic, Karl Rove? What a joke. Arnold has some giant skeletons in that closet of his. If the repukes think Clinton couldn't keep it zipped, they need to take a very close look at Arnie's shenanigans. And all his macho BS about how he gets the big "O" every time he pumps up. Puke. Did you happen to see the tape of him addressing a conservative group about a month ago, urging Davis' recall? He stood up there, pushing for the recall of the Gov of CA....hemmed and hawked and couldn't even remember Davis' name! He just said recall the Gov of CA! What truly surprises me is that Maria is going along with this charade. I guess love is blind afterall.

My sympathies to the great state of CA. But Arianna is going to run -I'd love to see her in a debate against Arnie. He couldn't match wits or wisdom with Ms. Huffington. Run Arianna, run!!!!!!
