French voters dump Chirac allies

Left-wing opposition parties have made strong gains in the second and final round of the French regional elections, according to exit polls.

The Socialists with allies won 50.1%, with the governing conservatives polling 36.9%.

The centre-right UMP party has been defeated at least 20 of the 22 regional councils in metropolitan France.

The BBC's Emma Jane Kirby in Paris says these results represent a stinging defeat for President Jacques Chirac.

Until now the centre-right controlled 14 regional councils, but it has only won Alsace so far, with the results from Corsica still to come.
