The Big Dirt Fight To Come: Advantage Kerry

I saw my first Kerry attack ad the other day. At first I thought it might have been a pro-Kerry ad because all I saw was a split screen of Kerry on one side and soldiers on the other...figured maybe they were playing up his military record. No, they were just trying to make it out that he had voted to cut military funding and then reversed himself.

I was thinking about this last night and I said to my partner, "I know this campaign is going to be nothing but ugly...but the thing is, I think the public is going to find George Bush's dirt a LOT more interesting than Kerry's dirt."

Which I think is true. I mean, Richard Clarke's book is now an instant bestseller. Why? Because people *really want to know* why 9/11 happened. And if they get the notion that it was Bush's fault, they're *really going to want to know* how and why. Bush has got himself into the middle of a huge heaping pile of really, REALLY exciting dirt. And the thing is there will always be more. My partner was concerned that the whole scandal might be "peaking too early." I said, "As Adrienne Rich says, 'every peak is also a crater.'" She said, "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" I said, "There is no limit to the depths to which this administration has sunk...so there will be no peak to this scandal."

The scandal beginning to unroll right now is more interesting to everyone in America than the most gripping nighttime drama could ever be. I bet it is even more interesting than gay marriage.

Whereas on Kerry, what do they have? Ooh, he's a flipflopping tax and spend liberal politician. Yawn.

Go ahead, George. Get dirty. I triple-dog dare ya.

1. I saw this ad last night too

It occurred to me that this is an incredibly risky ad subject for Bush. He is completely vulnerable to such an ad himself. I think the fascists are counting on a Gore-Dukakis like failure to defend themselves. If Kerry is smart he will hit back and hit back hard. I want to see an ad showing clips of Bush making jokes about WMD, 9/11, trifecta, etc. interspersed with pictures of the WTC on fire and flag draped caskets.

One other thing, is it me or are the ads starting way early this election?

...but I am starting to think that this time, people are REALLY tired of the negativism. I love what a Kerry spokesperson said about only having to tell the truth while all the bushies could do was lie, distort and attack.
