Clear Channel required emplyees to attend "Patriotic Rallies"
I just heard Roxanne Walker on Democracy Now. She's the radio announcer who was fired by Clear Channel because of her anti-war comments on one of their radio stations. She told Amy Goodman that it was mandatory for employees of the radio station to attend pro-war rallies. She said they refered to them as "Patriotic Rallies". How Third Reich does that sound?

2. Can you clarify something for me?
Was this the corporate policy of Clear Channel, Inc.? Or, was this the policy of the local General Manager.

I'm not particularly fond of Clear Channel, I just want to know exactly who to be angry at. :-)

credit where credit is due.

On-air people go to station events irrespective of the content, its always been part of the deal. Others may be required as well to help manage them.

Any different than on-air talent having to do promo spots at like, flea markets or car washes or something?

5. we'll have to wait for the Democracy Now transcripts
to get the exact quote. Whether it was the local station's policy or the corporate policy didn't come up. It was touched on very briefly at the very end of todays program. Also, I believe she did say that they were patriotic rallies at local ballgames and things like that. Not an exact quote but something like that. So, they might be able to get away with it as a promo or something.

7. My $0.02
It's one thing if the on-air talent is required to go while their on-the-clock. It's a promo.

It's another matter entirely if ALL employees are required to attend any sort of political rally, regardless of being on-the-clock.

It smacks of 1984's "Two Minute Hate".

Of course, I think all the senior management of CC should be strung up by piano wire so I can delight in watching them kick and froth blood at the mouth...
