This is how the German Media sees America

The German magazine Stern has published a new attack on Bush. For readers of German.
http://www.stern.de/politik/ausland/index.html?id=521345&nv=ma_ct

Here is a translation of the cover article's lead sentence.

"The war lie – We know with certainty that the justifications for the Iraq campaign were pretexts. Stern reporters outline in detail how the entire world was deceived."

Stern is an ideologically moderate, mainstream German magazine that is generally believed to stand between the more liberal Spiegel and the more conservative Focus (which, btw, is also fervently anti-Bush).

Just how enthusiastic do we expect European law enforcement agencies, not to mention the population in general, to be about helping America root out Al Qaida and other terrorists, when the above is Europe's picture of America and its leadership? As some of you know, translations of Michael Moore have led the German book charts for months on end. Some on the American right explain this by insinuating Europeans are, unconsciously, insanely jealous and "resent" us. Want a far more likely explanation? Here it is. American arrogance and duplicity has provided rational justification for Moore's claims.

It goes without saying that this state of affairs makes every one of us less safe.

The fact is, the editors of Stern are not Michael Moores. These are serious journalists who have to maintain credibility. I'm not saying this isn't biased journalism. But when you think about it, so is mainstream media in the States. Because the evidence for this article is out there. I just with the American people could see it.

2. The Bu$h administration squandered what little hope we had
Edited on Fri Mar-12-04 08:50 AM by Mari333
after 9/11, when the world came together and we have this incredible opportunity to unite as a world that stood together..we could have been at a crossroads, and even decided at that time to do some self analysis as to why we were hated as a country so much and rethink where our priorities were in the rest of the world, and attempt to behave like mature adults, and take responsibility for our past actions .
Instead, the little babies in the WH decided to go do some more murdering and use the whole tragedy as a way to line their pockets with cash. Abd destroy what little hope we had as a country, as a nation, as a people. It will take years and years for us to work out the damage thats been done, it may never be worked out , we are the nation of 5% using 25% of the worlds resources, whiny, arrogant, adolescent, angry, furiously mean spirited in so many ways and run by CEOs whose sole purpose in life is to gain short term profits at the cost of our lives, and the futures of our kids.
What gaineth a man to buy the whole world but lose his soul?
I have an image always in my mind of these corporate politicians sitting in castles swilling brandy , as the world crumbles around them, as the polluted air chokes them off whilst they pretend they are important people, when all they are are shallow empty vessels of monstrous ego and insecurity.
In the meantime, we live in despair with the rest of the world until these monsters in the WH are driven out in November, and thats not soon enough for me.

4. It's a nation of 5% using 25% of worlds resources (or more)
The way you have it would make us look pretty good.

10. They don't hate us
They're concentrating their hate on Bush. They are extremely hopeful about Kerrry.

That's the point. A new administration could give us a clean slate to take advantage of the international solidarity following 9/11.

14. "How America LIED to the world."
Perfekt! The linguistic choice of the verb "belügen" says it all. And do note the piece below on how you can get MORE VACATION for your money. Florida tourism will surely sustain a severe hit. It USED TO BE a #1 destination.

11. Absolutely insane, isn't it
I was living in Germany during the waning Clinton years and a Stern cover criticising Clinton like that would have been unthinkable.

We've come a long way.

8. As the Germans assiduously try to pursue terrorists,
we (the administration!!) won't even give them the information they need to successfully prosecute suspected terrorists, because it's "secret!!"

Or maybe the "evidence" we are holding would exonerate the suspects beyond a reasonable doubt!!

Der Stern has got it right.
I hope MILLIONS of people around the world demonstrate on March 20!!

13. If only.....
If only the American people had to read the British press 1 week out of the month. In fact, that ought to be an assignment for schoolchildren. Get these children to give a shit what the foreign mainstream media is saying.
