Pfc. Harrison Grimes, center, and fellow members of the 3rd Infantry Division deployed in Habaniyah, Iraq, listen to their new battalion commander explain that there is still no definite date for their return home to Ft. Stewart, Ga. (Pub: Washington Post / Photo: John Moore AP)

14. Thanks, y'all
This is what I have on it so far:

There was a picture on the front page of the New York Times on Tuesday, July 8. It showed several American soldiers in Iraq sitting in utter dejection as they were informed by their battalion commander that none of them were going home anytime soon, and no one knew exactly when they were going home at all. PFC Harrison Grimes sat in the center of this photo with his chin in his hand, staring at ground that was thousands of miles from his family and friends. A soldier caught in the picture just over PFC Grimes’ shoulder had a look on his face that could break rocks.

Very nearly two hundred of PFC Grimes’ fellow soldiers have died in Iraq, and many more have been wounded. The war created chaos in the cities, and it seems clear now that very little in the way of preparation was made to address the fact that invasion leads to social bedlam, not to mention a lot of shooting. Last Sunday, CNN’s Judy Woodruff showed a clip of a Sergeant Charles Pollard, who said, “All we are here is potential people to be killed and sitting ducks."

9. In Vietnam, high ranking officers spend only a few months in country
They were there long enough to get some medals and then they were rotated out. Maybe 3 or 4 months. I had 3 battalion commanders in 1 year. The one who was there when I arrived, his replacement and his replacement.

17. Timothy McVeigh was in G(ulf) W(ar) I
as I think John Muhommed (one the DC snipers) was. I'm willing to bet that GWII brings us another seriously disturbed young man.

Not that I for a moment condone what Mc Veigh did, but I remember reading several articles where his motivations were discussed and some of his writings on the topuc were reproduced, and it was that Tuner Diaries that "made" him do it; he says he was angered and sickened by what he saw during GWI. Again, this is no excuse. I think one article was by Gore Vidal, but my memory isn't so good these days.

8. Let them go home to see their families...
George P. Bush (or Barbara, or Jenna, or some other Bush kid) can step in and relieve them for a while.

Is it my imagination, or has anyone noticed a scarcity of people of color when Bush is photographed with the troops?

11. W or His Family Replace Troops?
That's not their job. They will be rich, comfortable, handle drugs...But doing military service is nothing they're interested in. Cheney said the same thing...This group has other priorities and National Defense is not one of them.
