Do any Liberals really hate America as Rush and Sean Hannity say?
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 11:17 PM by Quixote1818
It always burns me up when I hear Rush say this but last summer I actually met a very liberal girl from Santa Fe who actually hoped that the United States would go down. Now I am liberal but I ripped her a new one. We may not be perfect but I would rather fix things than hope for our demise. I think we were founded on good ideas and our founders were smart as hell. Sure we are not perfect but I love this country and still think we are the greatest country on earth. Anyone disagree with me?

1. Well, it's not perfect but it is home.
And as citizens of the U.S. we have the most influence on changing this nation for the better. Unamerican... no. Anti-status-quo? Yes.

But if you love it, you'll try to make it better.

4. I hate American arrogance
The US is a great place to live. We are, for the most part, very fortunate.

However, we do not have a monopoly on good ideas, intelligence or even freedom.

There are other countries that have far more progressive social policies.

To hope the US "would go down" is foolish if only from a selfish standpoint. There are many, many things that are wrong here. We have the ideas, intelligence, and capability to make things better. It is often our arrogance which results in us ignoring the problems in our government and society. There is little hope for improvement until there is honest recognition that we can do much, much better.

Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 11:25 PM by JudiLyn
Not even once.

When right-wingers accuse people of disagreeing with them as "hating America" they are pretending their own destructive leaders actually represent all Americans, which anyone with a partial brain recognizes as grossly incorrect.

Did you ever hear any Democrats accuse the hordes of drooling Republicans feeding on Bill Clinton's private sex life being "un-American," or when they howled over his policies, did anyone ever accusing them of "hating America?"

Please take time to think things over.

7. I love the Constitution. I don't like our current leaders.
I can honestly say I hate Bush, i.e. if he died, I would only lament the fact that he would be regarded as a hero.

It really depends on what they mean by "hating America". I love this country because of its possibilities. If only we could renounce our superpower status, we could have the rest of the world on our side again.

Capitalism is eating up the little guy right now and the Big corporations have too much power. Things need to be balanced out better for the little guy better.

The reason why is because I love America. I hate what Bush has done to it. These assholes have no right to say that liberals hate America.

10. Rush and Hannity are part of the problem
so of course they say that liberals hate America...because they think they are America.

America needs to examine what has happened in this country since WW1. This was the beginning of the oil wars that continue to this day.

Republicans offer no solution to dealing with the problems of resources, other than the tired demand for Americans to allow the crooks and criminals who support those two liars to continue to screw up this country and to take us further and further from the goals of our founders.

I don't want the demise of my country, I want a demise of the existing power structure because it is corrupt to its core, and, as Teddy Roosevelt realized, it is a danger to democracy to allow corporations to think they are above the government which allows them the freedoms they enjoy.

Liberals can fall into the trap set by Republicans if they equate our nation with the crony crookedness which infects our system.

don't kill the patient. cure the disease.

the disease is called fascism. it is a cancer in this nation's heart.

Rush and Hannity ARE America. But so are we. The choice Americans have to make is which America to leave our kids...Maybe it's just me, but the former seems like child abuse.

12. Most of us love our country
It's just 0.01% of liberals that are apologists for Communism and Al Qaida. I've seen signs at anti-war rallies that read "Communism, it's only killed a few million people, why the big deal?" or something like that.

16. The system is designed for change
If enough people decide that change is needed, the constitution allows evolution of thought and progression. That's why the current situation is horrible. This system that belonged to the people has been hijacked by the would be royalists. They stole the information system, they infiltrated the cabinets of representatives, and created an environment that only benefits them. The authoritarian regime happened and we are allowing it by not taking really hard actions.

28. I wouldn't even...
consider those people liberal.

Stalin, Mao, and other communist leaders were totalitarian thugs, the opposite of liberals.

You can't be liberal and be an apologist for tyranny and fascism, whether of the corporate, theocratic, or communist sort.

Yes, I too have occasionally seen signs like that at progressive events.

There's even a special name for the kind of people who carry them:

"Republicans".

Seriously, if you think I'm kidding, just spend a few minutes talking to these clowns the next time you run into them. Most of these so-called "Communists" and "Marxists" wouldn't know Karl Marx from Groucho Marx. They're simply there to pollute any potential coverage of the event, and to scare away any moderates who might actually be sympathetic to the demonstraters' cause if it got a full hearing.

13. Al Franken said it best in his new book "Lies"
Conservatives love America like a four-year-old loves her mommy. Mommy is perfect. Mommy can do no wrong. Anyone who criticizes mommy is evil and hates mommy.
Liberals love America like adults do. We understand it makes mistakes, and we hope that it does better in the future. We also try to improve it.

I'm paraphrasing here, but that's pretty much it.
We don't hate America, but liberals are adult enought to understand that America isn't always the good guy.

with pre-conventional moral reasoning (My dad is better than your dad) and Democrats think with Abstract Moral reasoning like that of a mature addult. (Doing the right thing and being humble is what should be valued).

15. If an American truly hates America...
...he's not a liberal. You can't be a liberal and hate America. On the contrary, being a liberal means loving America enough to point out her many flaws and work constructively toward making her better.

Kind of like a strict but very loving and fair parent.

It's those who trample the Constitution that are the America-haters.

18. I love America. It's just not...
...the fake America of those two jokers. I love the one founded by revolutionaries, radical intellectuals with a better idea, the America that tolerated eccentrics and left them alone.
Rush and Hannity are enamoured of a '50s lock step McCarthyite, 'man in the grey flannel suit', uptight America. You know, the one some of us rebelled against in the '60s. They're at war with the '60s, with FDR, with anything progressive. They're really not conservatives. They and their ilk are reactionaries...
Just my personal point of view...

20. Liberals can hate Hannity and Rush. America`s first ammendment won`t
be bothered. Just a bunch of snide republicans who voted in the minority. And have to rely on Presidential appointees to stop vote counting to install the loser. They might be bothered. But "Who cares what they think". As to the liberal girl from Santa Fe. Although I do not hope that the United States would go down. (Is that down to hell or oral sex?) Anyway, I do beleive we are doomed as a country if we do not unite to stop Bu$h Inc.`s world war 3 from continuing. I think she can just see the writing on the wall. Maybe in reality she "hopes" our country can be great again with elected leadership. Instead of what we have.

I don't like a lot of things in the US, but I'm trying to fix them for now and in a peaceful manner.

I'm not going to state that I'll always feel that way after November, but that's the way I'm looking at things now.

30. I was listening...
the other day to one of those right wing freaks. He was going on about how Bush is making us safer, and praising the fact that he was cutting spending.

Funny, how do you "cut spending" and end up with about half a trillion dollar deficit?

The man went on about how great it is we're spending money on the military yet he seemed completely baffled and irate that we'd spend any money on other domestic programs.

In a way conservatives don't understand that investing in health care, education, by getting people jobs, and other things at home is an important part of American defense. They view these things as fluff, and instead we should all be in a permanent state of anger and war, that we praise our leader in ways reminiscent of the way leaders are praised and hailed in totalitarian states...

And they call us anti American?
