NE - Republican accuses Common Cause of being extension of Democrats
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The head of the Lancaster County Republican Party is accusing the Nebraska chapter of the political watchdog group Common Cause of being an extension of the Democratic Party.
Jim Haga, chairman of the county GOP, said Wednesday he particularly questions the motives of Common Cause spokesman Jack Gould, who is frequently quoted by the media.

Gould often weighs in publicly with Common Cause's take on how government is being run - and GOP officials routinely are mentioned is his criticism.
It should be noted, however, that no Democrat has held a statewide office since 1999, when Gov. Ben Nelson and Lt. Gov. Kim Robak left office.
The GOP also holds 34 seats in the 49-member Legislature.

Gould said he was amused about the accusation of being an extension of the Democratic Party.
"I'm a registered Republican," Gould said. "I would deny that I am an arm of the Democratic Party - that sounds like something from the McCarthy hearings" that tried to root out Communists in the 1950s.
