Midwives/Nurse Practictioners
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 12:04 AM by jiacinto
Are there any midwives who are members at DU? Are there any nurse practicioners here?

A question: are there any nurse practictioner midwives who have their own offices?

Can a nurse practictioner open up her own office if she wanted to even if it were not economically feasible?

Are there any midwives/certified nurse practictioners who are men?

2. np`s can only
work if they are associated with a docter-at least in il-my wife and i went to a np for a few years and saw her for minor problems . if there were problems that could develope into serious illness she conferred with the doctor and he then saw us. as for mid wifes..we were out of that part of medical care along time ago.....

4. I had a midwife 3 yrs ago
But, it was in a large Medical office, that if something was wrong, you went to the OB down the hall.

5. Male NPs? You bet. I see 8 specialists on a regular basis

(don't ask), and 3 have NPs in the office. At least one of the NPs is a male.

On the independence issue: It depends mostly on the specialty and locality. In AZ there are plenty who work as midwives, I'm sure some do it independently. AZ state law allows NPs to write prescriptions and in rural areas, they can practice independently as clinicians (no surgery besides OB, though).

A responsible OB NP will be affiliated with a doctor in case complications arise--this is something anyone seeking an NP should ask about. ***

Not an NP; just someone with lots of experience with the medical field (sigh)!

***On edit: by "affiliated with," I don't mean with a MD practice, I mean someone they have agreed with to call on in case of complications.

I always thought they could do everything except surgery.

6. Can't say I've ever met a male midwife.
Most male baby catchers are MD's.

There is a practice in my community of nurse/midwives. However, one of the midwive's husband is their OB/GYN so I guess that is how they covered the MD issue.
