1. believe it or not there is a Space Shuttle base there...

..outside of Bamako (formerly Bathurst) there is an emergency landing strip for the Space Shuttle should things go awry shortly after launch....

Otherwise, a former british colony along the shores of the Gambia river, completely surrounded by Senegal.

Senegal occasionaly threatens to take over Gambia, but that never happens. (from the Senegalese perspecitve it does sort of make sense as Gambia is a strange geographic relic of colonialism).

10. Maybe you'd get better responses if it was just one thread

rather than the dozen or however many there are. In the original post you could note your reasons for wanting to discuss Africa and the regions you are particularly interested in. You've been around here longer than I have so you'll probably know better than I if something like that would work but I suspect it may work better than a lot of little threads that end up getting brushed into the archives. If it was all one thread then anytime someone responded they'd bump it.
