The Watergate story is on PBS now (eastern) and it's fascinating...
The comparisons to the * administration are frightening.
Nixon thought he was God..everything he did was done in the name of national security. They used wire taps, survellience, and bizzare plans to get information. History is repeating itself before our very eyes.

2. Must -See TV
THose in western time zones, this is definetly worth watching.

It's interesting television. And it is a good reminder that what we're seeing in the White House today is mereluy an extension of a mentality that goes back to the early 1970's (at least). The parallels are eerie.

3. Comparison to * Regime
We can only hope that * suffers the same fate as Nixon and is forced to resign. A key difference between then and now is that there was a Dem majority in Congress and there was a free and independant media in the US in those days.

The program is very interesting and worth watching.

4. What Repub alive is there to compare to Barry AuH2O?
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 08:56 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
It was Goldwater who convinced Nixon that the votes were there to impeach and that for the good of the counbtry he should go quietly. And Nixon had the decency to listen to his advice!
No, we only have R. scumbags like Orrin Hatch and Tom DeLay and Trent Lott today.
Times have changed. And for the worse.

5. WOW! WOW! WOW!

There was NO beating around the Bush (pun) here. They tied the Watergate story DIRECTLY to the current White House.

Excellent program. And I am old enough to have lived through that event. But this program was a great summary.

If you missed this Go directly to PBS's web site and see when it plays again. Record it, watch it a second time...but do not miss it.

7. This was a great documentary
I lived through all of this when I was in college. I think that is when my extreme distrust and loathing of conservatives was solidified for life. I wathced as they defended this obvious criminal Nixon.

I still think one of the great tragedies in the history of the USA is that this criminal Nixon did not go to jail. Ford deserved to be defeated for his pardon. Now Ford is excused for this travesty. He should go down as an accomplice in the coverup.

8. As Dean said at the end.....unfortunately the only lesson of Watergate
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 09:10 PM by Dover
seemed to be...."don't get caught". And the criminals from Watergate got off with ridiculously light sentences....as did the criminals of the Iran/Contra crimes. If we had been more adament upon those people paying real consequences for their crimes we probably wouldn't be in this predicament now. It's important to send them to jail because....did you see how they cracked under the pressure of actually serving time? They spilled the beans.

I would also like to see this whole Bush Crime Family serve very serious time and consequences for the heinous crimes. I'd also like to see vigorous investigation of 9/11 and the voting fraud and every other lie that followed. THEN maybe I'll be ready to 'move on'.

12. WHOA! Lowell Weicker said that Watergate had an ephemeral effect...When he
looks at WHAT'S GOING ON NOW and IRANGATE during Reagan, he wonders if it had any effect...!!

Weicker and Baker...both named by Nixon as not being "allowed in the WH again"

14. At least this program may inspire others to begin to THINK!!!
Here is a great site on Watergate history: http://www.watergate.info/burglary/burglars.shtml

One thing that struck me about the PBS show is the mention of the name of a man who
Mitchell contacted to get $250,000 for Halderman. Anyone hear the name? I believe
it was Morrie Kantz or something similar. It struck me because I never heard that name before
AND evidently this man is still alive. I started to wonder if he was "Deep Throat."

An observation that I made from the documents at the site listed above is that it is amazing
how involved the anti-Castro Miami group and the CIA were in the Watergate burglary. God only
knows how much more damage these thugs did. The anti-Castro group is probably one of the most
notorious "terrorist" groups operating inside this country. The history of their illegal activity goes back
50 plus years. They are one terrorist group that the US protects and refuses to interfere with.

16. I've told this before, but
here it is again.
Nixon-McGovern was the first election I voted in. I was in my early 30s and fairly apolitical. I thought the Watergate break-in had a bad odor to it from the get-go and was much more than a "third rate burglary". My friends all pooh-poohed it. Even my wife.
She was a repug election judge and voted for Nixon, which she has regretted ever since.
I cast my "protest" vote for McGovern, knowing he didn't have a snowball's chance.
I considered myself an Independent, as did my wife, until the 2000 debacle.
Now we're both yellow dog Dems.

The PBS special brought back a lot of memories. Damn I miss Sam Irvin and those like him.

18. I'm watching and I still want to know why Henry Kissinger
isn't in prison doing life for his part in the Nixon administration's crimes? Also, did you hear them say that everybody lied like it was a regular thing to do. No problem. No conscience. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
