According to Bush poor job training is the reason for the lack of jobs. He also made some stupid analogy about beauty school, or some crap, which I can't find on the net.

<"We better have a system which is able to be flexible enough to help people who want to work find a job, to match willing worker with willing employer," Bush said. "The key is to train people for the work that actually exists." Still, there was little explanation from Bush or his aides of how education initiatives and retraining programs would produce the large number of new jobs needed to ease the malaise that still exists in many communities.

3. there was a thing on CNN a few months ago about beauticians
and morticians as being jobs that are available. This was a show on whole professions being lost to trade - i.e., factory workers, etc.

its simple: Everyone just needs to be retrained to fill either of those 2 professions.

5. The beauticians have vacancies at the cable networks...
and the morticians are on backorder at the Dept. of Defense. Thank god for the military industrial complex.

4. Another way to say it....
...(and I wish some democratic candidate would) is that in the administration's booming success of a month - December,'03, - they "created" 1,000 jobs. Gosh, that means just under 20 new jobs per state in our nation! Add in the 3 million-plus unemployed by this administration's economic policies .... and you have a 1 in 12,000 chance of snagging that part-time job at the convenience/gas station! And if you add the moral duty to help prisoners upon release, with the proposed "training the inmates" initiative, you can begin to focus on the best option available for the unemployed today: rob a convenience store, spend five years in the state pen, and be trained to run the register you robbed upon release!

6. Beauty school
The same young woman has cut my hair for years and I know she doesn't make much money. She lives in a trailer and struggles to get by. I don't think it's lack of training or laziness either - that's just the way it is.

What about the people who lost their very high-paying jobs to people in India and China? Are they supposed to sell their houses and move into trailers and go to beauty school?

8. Train for what?
There are no jobs out there. And those that are are primarily minimum-wage service jobs - you don't need a training course in how to wrap the burgers and microwave them at McDonald's (I learned in two minutes when I worked there).

Well, Georgie, I'm getting a master's, I'm getting trained - where's my job?

9. Check NPR from today for the beauty school ref
i heard it this morning.....apparently, the *moron complained that job training institutions were training people for jobs that didn't exist, but were taking the 'credit' for doing what they were supposed to do, which is train people for jobs. Of course to hear him say it, it's just babbling and you have to dissect it to make sense of it.

12. Very true
I received a A.S. in HIM. When I wanted to continue school for a B.S. I learned that all the 4-yr universities in-state had pulled the program, (now know why) and at the time the breadwinner of the family (a Vet, over 40, in IT who was also trained in Vo-Ed many moons ago and then through OJT and self-study)was "laid-off" from a company moving to a nearby state where this education was available. Talk about pissed! Then the Fed decided it would be worthwhile to train the Welfare-to-Work folks w/FREE training (while I paid my way, every cent!)and to top it off give employers incentives to hire these rehabilitated people and/or prison folk to do the job. Well, I transferred the coding skills to transcription figuring I wouldn't be contributing to the hospital admin's new Carrerras and the keyed words would live forever, albeit in an archive somewhere, and now they've decided to outsource "medicalese" English and coding to China and India, but they just can't find enough of us????
