(Mad Cow) Cargill Cuts 700 Beef-Processing Jobs
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/cargill_layoffs

WITCHITA, Kan. - Cargill Inc. is cutting about 700 jobs at five beef-processing plants in Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado, citing lost exports of U.S. beef following the discovery of a single case of mad cow disease in Washington state last month.

Cargill's Excel Corp. subsidiary said Friday it was laying off 100 to 150 people at each of the plants. The five plants each employed 2,200 to 2,500 people. Notice of the layoffs was made Friday, the company said.

"A number of countries have banned U.S. beef, and there are some products we will not now be processing for export. That has led to the layoffs," said Bill Rupp, executive vice president of Excel.

Excel is based in Wichita. The affected plants are located in Dodge City, Kan., Schuyler, Neb., Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Plainview and Friona, Texas.

2. Short, sweet and to the point.
Most likely the first of several thousand to be laid off, perhaps even more than 10,000 before it's over.

4. That's so true!
I wonder how many of these workers were relatively new hires who were overqualified but worked there anyway just to pay the bills?

5. So sad.........but a direct consequence of an overreaction and no
idea of what "risk analysis" means, thanks to a press that wants to oversensationalize everything just to sell tv time and newspapers.

6. I personally don't think it was over sensationalized....we barely heard
about it...the foreign countries take it seriously.

For those who think it's nothing....Beef..it's whats for dinner!
Not in my house though.
