The Imminent Demise of the Republican Party
This is a very interesting artical by David Orr on yesterday's Common Dreams web site:

Following the election of 2004, much has been made of the weaknesses of the Democratic Party, even its possible end. But it has escaped the notice of our blow-dry television pundits and political observers alike that the Republican Party, in the full blush of triumph in control of all the branches of government and large sections of the media, stands on the edge of certain extinction. The reasons grow daily more evident. Over the past three decades, the moderate, business-oriented party of Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower was captured by its extreme right-wing thereby becoming a party dominated by ideologues, increasingly divorced from unmovable facts. But no organization, political party, or nation can long survive by ignoring realities of ecology, social justice, law, economics, and true security. Sooner or later, it will step off the proverbial curb into onrushing traffic of events, forces, and trends that it refused to see.

The Republican Party has already stepped into the road. The question is not whether it will survive as presently constituted, but what else will be destroyed as it collapses in ruin and ignominy, sooner than later. Beneath the noisy spin of its media echo chamber, the true platform of the Republican Party, its future epitaph, is founded on denial.

2. Sorry to rain on this parade....
...but 'common dreams' needs to rename itself common delusions.

The republican party is robust, insidious, adaptable and cohesive. They never stop thinking of ways to harm our country, and they are quite successful.

What people seem to forget, and what is just glanced over in this article is that the democratic party is also robust, adaptable and -when strictly necessary- cohesive. We have been quite successful in the past and will be again.

Reality check... Neither party is in danger of extinction. They just need a good ass-kicking.

3. Well said. With just 35 years of oil left, the Republican party has
married itself to the oil industry...just as with 'globalized' corporations. The clock is ticking and until locally based (the olive tree part of Friedman's "The Lexus and the Olive Tree") business entities take over from the 'globalized'-oil-dependent economics of the soon to be past...they become more and more IRRELEVENT to a practical economics that is more and more locally based.

They are 'getting over it' so to speak ! Read Powerdown, by Richard Heinberg.

4. We know they will destroy themselves
No unconscionably radical party which has tried to distort physical fact to fit dogma can possibly survive.

However, the question is whether or not they will follow in the steps of their third Reich predecessors and take millions of us with them as they face destruction.
