Herbert: A Speech That's No Joke (Gore's Speech)
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/28/opinion/28HERB.html?hp=&pagewanted=print&position=

It has always been easy to make fun of Al Gore. But if there's any truth to the thunderous criticism he's turned loose on the Bush administration this week, it's time to dispense with the jokes and listen seriously to what the man is saying.

If Mr. Gore is right, the nation is faced with a crisis of leadership that is perilously close to an emergency.

If he's wrong, then all the folks who have made the easy jokes at his expense can consider themselves vindicated.

The war in Iraq, said Mr. Gore, in an interview on Wednesday, "is the worst strategic fiasco in the history of the United States. It is an unfolding catastrophe without any comparison."

<snip>

It may be that the president never understood what made the U.S. great. In that case, he'd be among those who could benefit most from a reading of Mr. Gore's speech. If he followed that up with a look at the Bill of Rights (it would only take a few minutes), he'd have a better understanding of what this country, at its best, is about.

1. Al Gore. Our country at its best.
What a shame that we were denied this man as President. I think that Gore, unfettered by the need to constantly project some image that people think America wants, could be inspiring again.

What will become of this great, good man in the years to follow. Such unfair treatment, but the ability to rise again and still treat others well, to have a heart that wants to give, to have the intellect and decency that this man has.....

He's MY President. In my heart.

4. Wow! He reported on the speech the way it should be! He defends Gore
and was really moved by his words and the premises he laid out as to what Bush has done to the country.

It's shocking to hear someone finally praise Gore. I guess the country had to go to hell in the handbasket before people realized what kind of idiots were running it, now.

Herbert's last sentence says it all. I could bawl my eyes out seeing this in print. It's been so long since any of these papers saw what we here have been seeing since the Chimp stole the WH.
