8. OK - here you are
http://www.economist.com/World/na/displayStory.cfm?story_id=2677022

Sorry, not sufficiently technical to embed the link directly into this response. The Source is :

"IQ and the Wealth of Nations" by Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen (2002).

I'm not claiming it's scientific, or that there's a direct causal link. It's a bit like people saying poverty makes you iller. There's a statistical relationship - for sure, but not necessarily a causal relationship. This is obviously the same, though I personally think there is a causal relationship between being a bit thick and voting for *. Intelligent, well-informed people just cannot possibly vote for these lying, manipulating, selfish, irresponsible, trite, bigoted menaces that make up the Bush Administration.

I'm glad there's evidence to support my hypothesis !!!

3. I don't think you correctly identify the causality.
Because the states that vote democratic in Presidential elections also largely are run by democrats, I would argue more that democratic policies (social safety net, etc) foster a more intellectual atmosphere.

I do not know if this "IQ" test is actually a test of brain potential or just acquired knowledge, but at the very least, health care policies of democratic governments in these states (not to mention educational policies if this is an acquired knowledge type IQ test) would create this discrepancy.

Stupid vs misinformed...

9. See my response below
I'm aware of the lack of evidence of a causal link, but surely no inteligent person voted for Bush in 2000 ?!?!

11. Esp pre-natal programs
and early childhood. Exposure to environmental hazards early in life also affects intellectual development (think lead).

19. Yes, you're right, it is circular
More Democrats mean more people get more health care, better nutrition, better standard of living, better education, which translates to more people voting Democrat.

4. WTH? Where did you get this? It's my understanding that IQ has never
been calculated over an entire populace - nation, state etc.

I'd be very suspect of this.

12. Which part do you think is BS ?
The fact that these states voted for these particular parties in 2000 or the fact that these states collective IQ's are as stated ?

23. I find this hard to believe
50% of the general population has an IQ between 90 and 110, with 100 being the mean. 25% have IQ's over 110 and 25% have IQ's below 90. Below 70 is considered mentally retarded and those people make up only 3% of the general population. 80 to 90 is considered "low average" and 70 to 80 is considered "borderline" retarded. As bad as things are in Mississippi, I really don't see how the average IQ of the voters is could be that low (85). For one thing, I doubt that there are many voters with IQ's lower than 80.

24. Even Rove admits as much
Don't have the quote handy, but in a recent speech he said something like:

People are Democrats until they start having some success and moving up the ladder, and they become Republicans -- unless they get too much education and go back to being Democrats.
