The Mellowing of William Jefferson Clinton
Bill Clinton loves to shop. On a March day in an elegant crafts store in Lima, the Peruvian capital, he hunted for presents for his wife and the women on his staff back home. He had given a speech at a university earlier and just came from a ceremony kicking off a program to help impoverished Peruvians. Now he was eyeing a necklace with a green stone amulet.

Standing all by himself, the former president of the United States moved his eyes methodically across shelves of wooden carvings, jewelry and sculptures as he searched for something distinctive to bring his wife. “She used to look forward to me coming home from wherever I’ve been,” he mused with a laugh. “Now I’m afraid I’ll be second fiddle to whatever world leader she’s just met.”

Hillary Rodham Clinton, the secretary of state, had in fact just returned home from a trip to Mexico, then rushed to the White House to help announce a new war strategy. “I saw her on CNN standing behind the president talking about Afghanistan,” her husband said. “Then she went to Dallas for something. I don’t know why.”

He spotted a turquoise bracelet. “Hillary likes turquoise,” he noted as he fingered the piece.

7. If ET comes to visit....
...or finally tells us they're here, I can only hope they are not from your universe. Maybe it's just the Clinton fever. Thanks.

15. Grasping, needy opportunist, and very, very, very rich....
Wonder how much he got paid for the speech. Last year's average was $800,000. Of course now he's a two-fer. Married to the Secretary of State and all. That should be worth at least another $200,000.

Makes sense that he's in Peru for a little luncheon. The Bushes want SAFTA to go with CAFTA and NAFTA. SAFTA and CAFTA and NAFTA = SHAFTA.

Where there's oil, there's the Bushes. And, it seems, the Clintons.

10. He requires no rehabilitation. His legacy is magnificent--I consider him one of the great
president's in American history.

12. Actually, he seemed better while he was in office....
..... His stock is dropping post-presidency. Kind of a reverse Jimmy Carter.

5. I just finished it.
They actually talked about Clinton signing the Glass-Steagal repeal. That's what I was looking for. I didn't buy Clinton's explanation, but still.

11. Actually, I heard that in his first term as governor of Arkansas, he was very much a reformist.
Then he got his ass kicked in the next election. That's when he approached Tyson chicken and other corps. and let them know he would back off on the reforms. He won the next election for governor.

13. He was not such a bad guy, and politics is all about getting re-elected.
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 08:07 AM by bemildred
But I never saw him really fight for anything BUT getting re-elected, even when he could no longer run. And he couldn't keep his pecker in his pants.

16. Unfortunately, most politicians are a reflection of how bad things have gotten in this country.
My acid test is: where do they get their money from?
It it's primarily from small donors, great!
If it's from corporate special interest groups, sucks ;-(

Clinton did some really good things and he did a few really bad things:
media deregulation, NAFTA,GATT, Anti-terrorism act (not that I'm FOR terrorism - but this one was bad for civil liberties and opened the door for the patriot act).

14. Thanks, but I'm done with him ... all the times I defended the indefensible, no more.
Good-bye Bubba, please keep off of my TV screen? Many of us former Clinton loyalists have had MORE THAN ENOUGH of you.
