Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers
Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers
16:18 27 February 2009 by Ewen Callaway
Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

1. I have to agree with the comments after the articles.
The researchers conclusions are humorous, but aren't actually supported by the data. As a liberal living in a conservative area, who often visits more liberal areas, I can attest to the fact that one of the biggest differences between liberal and conservative areas are the availability of adult services. Dirty magazines? Adult bookstores and toy shops? Nude clubs? Prostitutes? All of these things are readily available in liberal urban areas, but they are few and far between in more conservative regions.

My guess would be that consumers of adult materials in conservative areas simply rely more on the Internet because there are so few other outlets available in the areas they live in.
