Cheney Video causes UPROAR!! (Invading Iraq would be a BAD idea!!)
Holy mother of pearl!!! There's a link in the article to the YOUTUBE video!!

http://www.radionetherlands.nl/currentaffairs/us070914

Comments made back in 1994 by the then US Secretary of Defence Dick Cheney about Iraq are causing an uproar in America. In a videotaped interview, the current Vice-President explains why he thinks an invasion would be a bad idea. The video has come to light on the same day US troops in Iraq launched a new offensive - Operation Phantom Strike.

The video is a gift to opponents of the Iraq war - and they've seized on it with delight. Dick Cheney, warning 13 years ago why launching an invasion of Saddam Hussein's Iraq could only lead to disaster.

"Ah, once you got to Iraq and took it over, and took down Saddam Hussein's government, then what are you going to put in its place? That's a very volatile part of the world and if you take down the central government in Iraq, you can easily end up seeing pieces of Iraq fly off."

    Cheney justifies 1991 decision
During the first Gulf War in 1991, Dick Cheney was Secretary of Defence under the former President Bush. In the video, he justifies the US decision at that time not to push the war through from Kuwait to Baghdad...."How many additional dead Americans is Saddam worth? And our judgement was - not very many and I think we got it right."

3. Chee-knee well knew that during the period between the Gulf War
and the 2003 Invasion any and all capabilities Iraq had to defend itself were destroyed by weapons inspectors and U.N./U.S. economic sanctions.

He isn't disputing his own, earlier words - he is admitting the extent to which the 2003 Invasion is a WAR CRIME - an illegal, immoral, attack on a defenseless nation that was SURE to be a cake-walk in terms of their not having a military that could respond.

Obviously, Satan and his minions underestimated the extent to which ordinary Iraqi's would defend their nation/neighborhood when weapons began to flow freely to citizens and agents worked to foment civil war so that they would "all kill each other" -- to play on a quote from a Reagan official. When asked whether the U.S. interest was best served by Iraq or Iran winning the Iran/Iraq War, the official said that he didn't care who won, he just hoped they would all kill each other.

5. What uproar?
Of course it should cause an uproar, but I don't see one.

Is the video being talked about constantly on TV news and commentary shows? Or by newspaper editorial writers or pundits? I don't get that impression.

10. Exactly. No uproar.
Not here, at any rate, where it might do some good. And I don't think there will be an uproar here, unfortunately.

7. Al Franken covered this in his last book
Not only did he talk about Dick Cheney's 1994 comments (including the ones quoted above) but he also pointed out that back in 2001 both Powell and Rice also DEFENDED the containment policy towards Iraq that had been in place since the end of the first Gulf War. It still befuddles me as to how anybody could have honestly believed that a battered, poor, third world country with a ruined military and without even any control over it's own airspace could, within 1-2 years suddenly morph into the single greatest threat to our country (or any other country for that matter) since circa WW2 Germany/Japan/Italy. But then again, it's not like we really have much of a media apparatus out there committed to creating a well-informed citizenry. Kinda depressing, really.

12. Uh, I didn't WRITE the article. Take that up with the Netherlandian who did...
My particular delight is in the TAPE, not his job description at the time. The tape was recorded in the year cited.

It's clear that Dick got an honoraria from the entity, the friendly entity, who is interviewing him on the tape. The interview probably followed a speech, for which he was paid handsomely, and maybe a rubber chicken dinner.

It's how those interest groups and think tanks funnel their money.

But I love the hubris of it all.
