Time to Play, Hey That Makes Sense

From the Agence France press, KABUL (AFP) – “More than 30 Taliban militants were killed when their boat sank in a river in southern Afghanistan, the defense ministry said Tuesday, in the second such incident in four days. Soldiers backed by foreign troops fired on the makeshift boat as it crossed a river in southern Helmand province on Monday, ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said. "Over 30 Taliban were on board and all of them drowned and died," he told AFP.

The soldiers had come under fire from those on the boat, he said.

"Those onboard were all terrorists," a statement from his ministry said. About 60 fleeing Taliban guerrillas were killed in a similar incident after their boat sank in volatile Helmand on Friday, the spokesman said at the weekend.

The US-led coalition said it was aware of such an incident, which its reports said occurred on Sunday, but it was not involved. The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force did not have information about the reported sinkings.”

Ok, sure they were all terrorist’s it could happen, but one thing for sure is they weren’t smart terrorists. It’s June in a mountainous country with a melting snow pack and the “terrorist’s” were crossing a river on a makeshift boat and sometime in the middle of that voyage someone says, “Hey, you know what? While we’re trapped out here in the on this make shift boat in the middle of this river let’s take a few pot shots at those soldiers.”

Question General, if they all died how do you know they were all Taliban? Was it like an old episode of Batman and they were all following the Penguin with black tee shirts on that said Taliban on them.

When you say they drowned General, do you mean to say that your men along with supporting NATO troops were firing on a makeshift boat in a river and it sank before your men hit anyone?
General would you say that perhaps more time on the target range was in order?

A boat sinking in a river is an accident a boat sinking under fire is combat and a boat ambushed from the shore without being given a chance to surrender is murder. But a makeshift boat that it attacked by troops in mid river with NATO supplied automatic weapons that sinks before any injuries are sustained is astonishing!

So General this is the second time in four days, quite a coincidence don’t you think? I wonder how many places its safe to cross that river in spring?

I’m all for catching the bad guys but this story pardon the pun doesn’t hold water. First you got this General who sounds like one of the banditos from Treasure of Sierra Madre saying, “Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges! They were Taliban and they were all terrorist’s every last one of them, now where do I collect my money?”

And what has NATO to say about these brave freedom fighters? Translate that, “Un ah man don’t look at us we barely know these dudes your not pinning this on us.”

The true story of what went on here we will never know, but the story as it’s told sinks like the boat it’s describing either it’s a makeshift story to cover up a massacre. Or it’s more tribal than Taliban but since no one wears uniforms who knows? Since no one was hit it could even be General Azimis own men who drowned crossing the river.

In World War One we had the Lafayette Escadrille in the Spanish Civil war we had the Abraham Lincoln division perhaps in honor of their shooting prowess we should name this group the Stevie Wonder Brigade.
