Episcopalians, Moravians apologize for slavery
Two of the United States’ long established churches recently issued public apologies for their participation in the enslavement of Africans.

The Moravian Church has apologized for its use of enslaved Africans by noting that this was “the low point of Moravians in North America” and by pledging to eliminate the vestiges of racism within its church during the next four years.

The Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops has endorsed a resolution to apologize for its church’s participation in the enslavement of African people in the United States.

By unanimous vote, the Bishops also apologized for their church’s complicity with subsequent state and local “Jim Crow” laws – enforced between 1876 and 1964 – which made Black people second-class citizens.

Included alongside the apology and the understanding that African enslavement was a “sin,” is an acknowledgement of the “economic benefits the Episcopal Church derived from the institution of slavery.”
