"It was like 144,000 votes cast," said Garofolo, whose corrected accounting showed just 5,352 ballots from a pool of fewer than 19,000 registered voters.

OK, so what if it had been just 100 or so votes off, would anyone have noticed, and if so would they have called it "close enough" (better than punch cards, etc). What if it gave one candidate 100 of the other candidate's votes. Who would know?
