Bush vows to pursue controversial wiretap program

Dec 19, 2005

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush said he would reauthorize a controversial wiretap program targeting US citizens as long as the United States "faces the continuing threat" from terrorists.

"We need to connect the dots before the enemy attacks, not after," Bush told a year-end press conference on Monday as he mounted an unapologetic defense of the spy program, which has drawn a congressional outcry and calls for an investigation............

NSA Refuses Order From Congress

The NSA recently asserted attorney-client privilege to block the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence from obtaining documents it requested. Congressman Bob Barr (GA-7) noted in an article in Insight Magazine, "While this argument carries absolutely no legal weight, the fact the NSA made it in the first place is a definite warning sign that something is wrong." In response, Barr and Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) have added an amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Authorization bill (H.R. 1555, Sec. 309), that will require the Intelligence Community to report within 60 days on the precise legal standards it uses when communications involving American citizens are intercepted.
At the same time, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has filed a suit in federal court seeking a court order for the release of controversial documents concerning potential government surveillance of American citizens. EPIC had earlier submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to NSA for the documents. That time has long since passed.
