CIA case: Special prosecutor's focus on media should prompt investigation
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 10:15 AM by Notorious Bohemian
This is yesterday's editorial in the Lansing State Journal, the newspaper for Lansing, Michigan.
"Special Prosecutor's focus on media should prompt investigation".

"The arguments over the First Amendment principles in play in the Valerie Plame outing investigation are troubling. However, they also obscure another important point:

Just what in the heck is special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald doing?

This was a man appointed to discover whether federal laws had been broken by government officials in the publication of the identify of Plame, who works for the CIA.

Now, much of what Fitzgerald knows is secret, but from his public actions, it raises troubling questions. So troubling, in fact, that it is time to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Fitzgerald's possible criminal abuse of his office".
<snip>

There's a reason why I despise the Lansing State Journal, and this editorial is just ONE example!!!

1. Not sure I agree.
From your post it sounds like the Lansing State Journal editorial is saying that Fitsgerald should be investigating government officials, rather than the media who reported their leaks. I agree with that criticism.

Someone, with access to highly sensitive information, outted Plame, a CIA operative, during wartime. That's treason, and worthy of investigation. The reporters who recieved and then published that information are small fish.

Fitzgerald should be hunting big fish. Maybe he is, and the small fish are just the first steps? Fingers crossed.

BY a special prosecutor!

From the editorial: "So troubling, in fact, that it is time to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Fitzgerald's possible criminal abuse of his office".

4. The Sun-Times had a similar editorial
which is why I hate the Sun-Times (Richard Perle is on their board). But when I read it (last week) it made me believe that Fitzgerald must have a case that is serious, since they were starting to spin before any charges are brought...they did the same thing when Fitzgerald was investigating Ryan(another dirty Repuge) in Chicago, of course he was getting close to exposing DeLay with that case...maybe it even led to the DeLay case, since his case started about the time of the Ryan conviction...but anyway, the Trib covered it for what it was - a dishonest politician, while the Sun-Times did the Repuge bit of "they all do it"...
