CA Rep. Dan Lungren admits Iraq war is about oil
This is from tomorrow's issue of the Sacramento News & Review, which is up online (if you know the secret to find the address). It's about a letter from California Rep. Dan Lungren to constituents defending his vote to support drilling in ANWR, in which he claims that we're in Iraq to secure oil. Wow.

...

The letter, dated April 4, 2005, starts off by defending the Republican Congress’ push of House Resolution 6, energy legislation that allows drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). While critics say the oil in ANWR would last only six months, Lungren argues that it could last 25 years by being used to “supplement rather than replace our need for foreign oil.” (Congress passed the bill on April 21.)

But it’s what comes next that caught Eaton’s attention. While discussing the nation’s dependency on foreign oil, Lungren writes, “I feel quite strongly that as long as we have our military in the Middle East fighting so that we can continue to purchase oil from that region, we have an obligation to find alternatives to foreign oil. It is difficult to justify the death of even one soldier when we are not doing everything in our power to explore options for oil within our country.”

9. Lungren is a real creep.
I remember when he was AG, all he needed was the brown shirt. Figures he would vote to drill in ANWR.

11. Why does this matter?
There are still a lot of amerkins that think Saddam had something to do with 9/11.

I agree that it is news, but when the media doesn't even pick up on the British story that Iraq was pre-planned in 2002 then why would I expect anyone to see this but us DUers.

14. Maybe we have a chance to get this in the spotlight if....
we forward it to all our friends, regardless of the political stripe. Especially those of you who have friends in other countries! Even if the MSM skips it, if millions of people have it in their email box, it's a lot harder to ignore!

18. Unfortunately it is about MORE than oil!
It is about the bushies and their oil friends getting control of these resources so THEY can get even richer. There is no good motive behind this. They are not doing it for the country. It is totally selfish. It is also stealing. They started a war with the Iraqi so they could gain control over the oil that Iraqi would not give them. I suspect that we are doing likewise in other Middle East nations as well. It is enough to make one feel dirty.

22. IMPEACH BUSH NOW: 'intelligence&facts fixed around policy' re: Iraq War
When Blair goes down, and Gordon Brown becomes PM, Bush II administration will be next:

".....In emotionless English, Dearlove tells Blair and the others that President Bush has decided to remove Saddam Hussein by launching a war that is to be "justified by the conjunction of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction." Period. What about the intelligence? Dearlove adds matter-of-factly, "The intelligence and facts are being fixed around the policy."

Ray McGovern served 27 years as a CIA analyst and is now on the Steering Group of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. He works for Tell the Word, the publishing arm of the ecumenical Church of the Saviour.

"Intelligence and facts are being fixed around the policy."

Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would see those words in black and white—and beneath a SECRET stamp, no less. For three years now, we in Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) have been saying that the CIA and its British counterpart, MI-6, were ordered by their countries' leaders to "fix facts" to "justify" an unprovoked war on Iraq. More often than not, we have been greeted with stares of incredulity.

It has been a hard learning—that folks tend to believe what they want to believe. As long as our evidence, however abundant and persuasive, remained circumstantial, it could not compel belief. It simply is much easier on the psyche to assent to the White House spin machine blaming the Iraq fiasco on bad intelligence than to entertain the notion that we were sold a bill of goods.

Well, you can forget circumstantial. Thanks to an unauthorized disclosure by a courageous whistleblower, the evidence now leaps from official documents—this time authentic, not forged. Whether prompted by the open appeal of the international Truth-Telling Coalition or not, some brave soul has made the most explosive "patriotic leak" of the war by giving London's Sunday Times the official minutes of a briefing by Richard Dearlove, then head of Britain's CIA equivalent, MI-6. Fresh back in London from consultations in Washington, Dearlove briefed Prime Minister Blair and his top national security officials on July 23, 2002, on the Bush administration's plans to make war on Iraq.

Blair does not dispute the authenticity of the document, which immortalizes a discussion that is chillingly amoral.
