Losing by 335,000 in N.H., Nader Demands a Recount
By Jonathan Finer and Brian Faler
Wednesday, November 10, 2004; Page A07

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader, who lost by about 335,000 votes in New Hampshire, has asked the state for a recount.

No, the longtime consumer advocate is not hoping to change last week's outcome in the Granite State, where Democrat John F. Kerry was the winner. Rather, he said, he is concerned about the veracity of the result

"We have received reports of irregularities in the vote reported on the AccuVote Diebold Machines in comparison to exit polls and trends in voting in New Hampshire," Nader wrote Secretary of State William M. Gardner. "These irregularities favor President George W. Bush by 5% to 15% over what was expected."

New Hampshire uses Diebold machines at 132 polling places. Gardner's office received Nader's fax at 4:59 p.m. Friday, one minute before the deadline. Under state law, if a candidate requesting a recount finished more than three percentage points behind, he must pay for the process. Gardner said that if the Nader campaign sends a check for $2,000 and promises to pay any additional charges, he will round up the ballots and initiate a hand count.

Spokesman Kevin Zeese said Nader was planning to send the check yesterday. "Either it will allay people's fears about the results, or it will open the door to looking at other states," Zeese said.

1. If he cared about actual results,
and not making his republican donors happy, he would demand the recount in Florida.

Ralph Nader Holds Press Conference in Washington, DC 1:00 PM, November 10, 2004

WASHINGTON -- November 10 -- Was Every Vote Counted Accurately? Nader/Camejo Goes Forward with Hand Recount in New Hampshire

Washington, DC: Independent Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader will be holding a press conference at 1:00 in at 1616 P Street, NW, 7th Floor. The press conference will focus on widespread reports of voting problems that raise questions about vote counting. The United States needs to face up to serious shortcomings in its electoral
process so that we can have trust in the results of the vote.

Nader/Camejo has requested a hand recount of the vote in New Hampshire because of reports of anomalies favoring President Bush in towns that used the Diebold AccuVote optical scan machines. A hand recount will either rule out the possibility of machine error or show a discrepancy in the Diebold machine and the actual vote-either way voters need to know. To review the request for a hand recount in New Hampshire visit www.VoteNader.org. Similar inexplicable results have been found in other states, including Ohio. Nader has called on John Kerry to demand that every vote be counted accurately. His campaign has remained strangely silent on the matter.

This election has highlighted the need for electoral reform including federal standards for federal offices and non-partisan administration of the elections from ballot access, through debate participation and to how the vote is cast and counted.

at least he has more spine than the majority of Dems who wouldn't dare ask for a recount for fear of alienating the undecideds who may possibly be considering voting Democratic in 2008, or 2012, or 2016, etc. Heaven forbid if the Dems actually offend someones tender sensibilities. :eyes:

15. Nader is a loose canon whom I've despised for several years, but
now that we live in the Holy States of Murika, my perspective has changed radically. What we need are a LOT of loose canons. People who don't listen to ANYONE but their lawyers, and even they don't always get to have a say. This is exactly the same behavior as PNAC who took over the US, may she rest in peace.

However, the US, like Murika, are not living things, but living ideas, and they can be killed and re-born. It depends on what the people will allow. Murikanis believe everything they see on TV. Everything. You just have to say it often. Loose canons like Ralph get more press than Kerry ever has or will in the old US or in Murika.

Ralph, my friends, has worked his way into the history books in a rather significant way. And, he's still alive and kicking.

He doesn't take sides. He'll step on anyone. He'll take money from anyone. If you want to invest in a loose cannon, more power to you. It just might work out in your favor.

19. Nicely put
We have to stop relying on our Dem leaders to lead -- they won't. They either don't know how (anymore), or they don't have the intestinal fortitude for it. We've waited for four long years, pinning everything on this election.

We now have our answer: WE have to be the ones to make things happen. If we're lucky, they'll come following along (since following is their cowardly specialty).

I'm with you: bring on the loose cannons. We have NOTHING to lose at this point, nothing.

I for one feel liberated and energized. DUers did this. Can you grok it? DUers did this!

Go figure.

Polyphonic procedure involving a specified number of voices in which a motive (subject) is exposed, in each voice, in an initial tonic/dominant relationship, then developed by contrapuntal means. Nader, exposes the subject without venturing out of an initial tonic/dominant constellation and consists of one exposition followed by optional developments.

30. Nader is the man
Right on. I don't like people who blame Nader for 2000, and hate him in general. He's probably the most sane and brave warrior for democracy that ever existed in recent times. Christ, he's been at it for decades, making serious progress for the Joe Blows in the street. As for him spoiling things, give me a break. You can't blame the guy for sticking to his guns. The deal is, a democracy - as long as we're pretending to live in one - has to give everyone a chance, and this two-party bullshit is a threat. Instead of making a wishy-washy political decision on a case-by-case basis, he's doing the right thing, and he continues to do the right thing even when the masses are against him. Good for him.

27. If he did it too early it would have given Bush more time
to screw with the ballot boxes that hold the optiscans. Waiting until the last minute after many of Bush operatives left the state of New Hampshire made it harder for them to recreate ballots to match the ballot boxes. Don't put anything past these Bushes. They are shocked that we would ask a recount in a state that We won. But this is where we need to catch them. We threw the GOP off their game. They were waiting for us in OH, NV, NM and FL. This was great strategy..and someone on this little website may have saved US democracy and the world!
