Car bomb targets Iraqi finance minister

BAGHDAD, Nov 7 (Reuters) - A large car bomb exploded in an attack aimed at Finance Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi in central Baghdad on Sunday, but there was no immediate word on his fate, a government official told Reuters.

The car blew up in the street where Abdul Madhi lives in the plush Karrada district of the capital near the Tigris river, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the sky.

It is not known if Mahdi was at home at the time. He is a senior official of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a powerful Shi'ite party.
