Orlando Sentinel: 15,000 at Dean Rally in Seattle
Edited on Sun Aug-24-03 10:21 PM by tsipple
Via the Dean for America campaign at their live news web site, reporting the Orlando Sentinel estimate. Crowd of 15,000 shows up Sunday evening in Seattle to hear Howard Dean during his "Sleepless Summer Tour."

Still looking for link to the Orlando Sentinel story (or another press account). Pictures expected soon at the Dean web site.

(On edit: Corrected to Sunday night.)

1. Good Lord
That is the type of crowd a presidential candidate would get in October during the last weeks of the campaign. Phenomenal.

7. Live from the rally:
Live from Seattle...
"Never before in the six years I've been involved in politics have I ever seen anything like this. Everywhere I look were more people waving Dean signs and wearing Dean shirts. From the main stage to press riser was a shoulder-to-shoulder sea of Dean signs as far as the eye could see. At least 4,000 people just in that front area! Moving to the press riser, I found an even larger sea of Dean signs behind the press risers, flowing all the way down the street for nearly a block. At least twice as many people as the group in front of the press risers! Media reports and police official estimates put the crowd between 12,000 to 15,000 people. All I can say is that Washington is certainly Dean Country. Photos are coming -- stay tuned."

11. WOO HOO! I'm so GLAD I moved to this area!!
I was going to take my first solo venture into Seattle this evening, to see Howard Dean. I thought.. 3,000+ were signed up on his site to go to the rally.. 3k. I thought I could handle that. But something told me that there would be a bit more than that, and I stayed home. 15,000?? That is so incredibly awesome! I'm so proud to be living in the Puget Sound area now!

When you see those kinds of numbers, you KNOW that something he represents is resonating with the people. I bet Lieberman and Kerry, et al, are gnashing their teeth tonight over this. Dean is a phenom, I hope it lasts!

Next time Dean is in the Seattle area, I'll jump on the fundraiser tickets fast (those 600 sold out right away, that's my best chance of seeing him.. next time he comes here, the crowds will be even bigger. I say they should rent CHENEY Stadium in Tacoma. The irony would be priceless.

12. Liberman and Kerry are probably too
stunned to gnash anything.

This is unbelievable and unprecedented, and totally awesome. Look at how easy it is: be yourself (authenticity), stand for something, tell the truth. What a concept! The people LOVE it, can't get enough of it.

And I'm one of them.

16. Welcome to Sea-town Caliphoto!
I went down to Westlake tonite, to check Dean out. It was so lovely to be amongst a large group of diverse people who were excited to hear straight talk from the Doctor. Hopefully the next rally will have to be at Safeco Stadium to accomodate everyone!

13. Fear not...I predict
...the Blethen family-owned Seattle Times will report a crowd of 600.

They love George because he's going to make all their estate-tax problems go away.

You have to go to a Florida paper to get straight WA state news, I guess....

32. Only in Seattle...

...can a politician pick up a baby to kiss, and that baby has a mohawk!

What really struck me about that photo, and gave me a little hope, is the look on Dean's face. He's Happy! There is joy in him from being around people. I haven't seen that since the Big Dog left office.

We can not survive 4 more years of Bu$h Inc. It will be "Game Over, Prepare for Revolution Time" If Bu$h Inc. is not ousted in 2004. Avoid small planes. Dr. Dean.

33. I've thought of myself thus far as just a Deanie Leanie
BUT the goosebump level on my arms just reading about this event, seeing the fire in this man that he sends just through photos, -- it's having an amazing effect on me. (I already appreciate his positions and the way he communicates them in his speeches, so I'm not basing my feelings entirely on the snapshots, OK?)

While I will support anyone but Bush in 2004, I just can't imagine anyone having the inspirational quality that Dean has. I think he has some of what McCain had, and I think he will appeal to alot of the McCain swing voters. I know plenty of Dems who sure did like McCain's fire, even though they disagreed w/many of his positions! How nice to see a Dem with fire AND the right positions!

August 25, 2003: the day I finally stopped waffling between the several excellent candidates we have for president and picked ONE for the primary.

34. I was there - it was great
My boyfriend's sister had just arrived from New York and was going to have some coffee with us around 5:00 (events started at 5:30) then head up to the San Juans. Well, we met her about 5:30 (the crowd was already quite big) and grabbed a bite to eat, and she decided she wanted to stay for the speech and head up the next day.

I could already feel the energy as we were driving downtown. We went up Roosevelt Way and at two different bus stops, I saw people getting ready to go to the rally (our car was too small to offer them rides.)

When we arrived downtown, every time a bus pulled up, including those from north of the city, Dean supporters spilled out. Most of them were already wearing t-shirts or pins.

The police were friendly (at least the ones I saw), gradually alloting more space to the crowd as it got bigger. They were all smiling, too.

What really struck us about the crowd was the age variance - lots of college students, lots of senior citizens, and lots of kids.

Everyone was in a good mood. There were three freeper types carrying flags and shouting stuff like "four more years" but everyone I saw just burst out laughing at that. As Dean outlined some of Bush's activities, they sort of disappeared (at least from my view.) My boyfriend had a University of Michigan shirt on - Dean mentioned the Michigan lawsuit twice, so we were really proud, yelling "go Blue!"

Afterwards, everyone was happy and chattering and dispersed really quietly and peacefully. I stopped in at Border's and bought Al Franken's books. I had to ask where it was - it seemed hidden away - so I asked why it wasn't in the window and they said they didn't have enough copies left to even try to promote it!

When we got home, we put on KIRO radio. Brian Baloney Maloney, conservative talk show host, was already having to deal with people calling about the rally and then at 9:00 p.m., liberal Erin Hart let people go with it for an hour. Lots of positive feedback.

I think everyone was bottled up and ready to go after the frustration of Bush slinking through town on Friday.
