CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian state-owned newspaper Sunday blamed UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his "submission" to the United States for the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad.

"UN Secretary General Kofin Annan alone bears the responsibility for this hideous act, after he agreed to provide the required legal cover for the occupation of Iraq," wrote the al-Akhbar daily in its main editorial.

"The motive of the group who carried out the crime of blowing up the UN building .. was the submission of the international organisation to US hegemony," added the piece, signed by al-Akhbar chief editor Galal Duweidar.

1. I have been saying this was the motive for the UN bomb all along
Nothing conspiricy theory laden, no CIA of Chalabi needed, just the pure hatred of an occupying army, and the recognition that a former friend (UN) had provided cover for the illegal war in a resolution the prior week.

This was payback, and message, and if I do say something awful, it WORKED. UN is backpeddling, UN members are rethinking sending troops the members of import are saying that the US must now relinquish control of Iraq some for any troops under the UN flag to land.

Horrid that innocents died.
