Hair Stem Cells May Offer Baldness, Burn Treatments
WASHINGTON (Reuters)

Master cells found deep inside hair follicles might offer a new way to treat baldness and burn victims, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. ..

The cells, known as stem cells, replace not only hair but also stretches of skin and sebaceous glands, key to healthy skin and hair, the researchers report in this week's issue of the journal Cell. ..

"With debate about the cells' multipotency within skin tissue settled, we can now ask whether the stem cells can also make other cell types in addition to hair and skin," Rockefeller's William Lowry said in a statement.

"These results open the door to that possibility." ..

1. This could be a big break for our returning soldiers.
Many of them are burned and scalped by shrapnel.

6. I would like to take this opportunity
to point out the fact that many people were badly burned
when the jet crashed into the Pentagon.

Luckily everyone emerged from that inferno,
which allegedly exposed many of them
to temperatures in excess of 1,000 degrees,
with their hair intact.

Almost of them recovered completely within weeks,
even Juan Cruz-Santiago
whose contact lenses melted onto his eyeballs,
is able to see just fine.

All those with third and forth degree burns
(into the muscle and down to the bone)
are doing very well.
There are no signs whatsoever of any skin trauma.

Since the war-wounded are being treated in the same medical facilities,
it is not immediately clear why
they are not experiencing the same miraculous recoveries.

3. My guess is therapy with this would be like hair transplant
only the "plugs" would come from a petri dish rather than the sides of the head.

But it seems "too good" to be true, I am guessing harvesting and cloning your own hair's stem cells isn't going to be cheap. At least initially.

But I think the research team has found grant writing heaven.
