Bust sparks "riot"
August 31, 2004 -- A near-riot broke out between cops and neighborhood residents of an upper Manhattan street last night after witnesses said an officer beat a handcuffed man.
The chaos began when someone in a crowd tossed an egg at a police van on West 172nd Street near Fort Washington Avenue in Washington Heights just after 7 p.m., cops and witnesses said.

The group exchanged comments with the cops, and a man, 19, was arrested for disorderly conduct, police and witnesses said.

"Once they had him handcuffed, they continued screaming at him and he was screaming back," said Anthony Reynoso, who was working with a film crew at the building. That's when an officer hit the teen in the face, Reynoso said.

"They took it out on the kid. From to the paddy wagon, they were hitting him in the head with a stick," said Reynoso, 27, who lives on the block.

From what I have seen, the cops have been very aggressive all over the city. People are going to fight back sooner or later.

When marchers approached the Garden, a police detective was knocked off his scooter. He was then repeatedly kicked and punched in the head by at least one male demonstrator, the police said.

The detective, William Sample, was listed in serious condition at St. Vincent's Manhattan Hospital, where Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly both visited him, the police said. There was no immediate word of an arrest in the assault, but as of 9 p.m., the police said there had been 11 protest-related arrests.

2. Fill up the jails
Time to review the non-violent protest tactics of Ghandi and King. The motherfucker is gonna get heavy ... we need to tool up. This is really beginning to feel like the 60's.

Never was nostalgic about the 60's. They by and large sucked, and the aftermath (the 70's) were really disappointing.

4. Just leave it to the Right Wing.
I never thought something like this would happen again. Not nostalgic either -- particularly not now.

But leave it to the unbelievable criminal incompetence, bigotry, hatred, greed and utter stupidity of the Right Wing -- they have actually managed to bring it all on again.

5. What is it about the psychological make-up of cops-
not all, but most- that compels them to be such fucking assholes? Do they honestly beleive that any true repug would piss in their ear if their brains were on fire? I'm positive the rw considers them useful idiots.

6. actually, it's all of us....
though policemen have historically been those who were worst betrayed by their own gullibility and sincere faith in 'might is righteous'
...progress in human affairs is a dreary thankless battle and in a generation we (humanity) have regressed to where the very idea of 'human rights' is a pathetic joke...
>it's hard not to despise our race (humanity) when one reads alot of history, but it's all we have :(
