Guardsman 16th soldier from state to die in Iraq

By Ryan Clark

A 25-year-old Army National Guard officer from Mississippi has been killed in Iraq, a family member said today.

Catherine Hardy of Philadelphia said the family was informed Sunday afternoon of the death of her grandson, 2nd Lt. Matt Stovall. She said Stovall left in September 2003 with the 367th Maintenance Company, but later transferred to another unit.

Hardy said the soldier’s parents, Buck and Ellon Stovall, traveled from Philadelphia to Southaven to be with their son’s wife and 2-year-old child.

She said Stovall’s 32-year-old brother, Mark, is with the 298th Corps Support Battalion in Iraq but is returning home to be with the family.

(snip)

Stovall is the 16th Mississippian to die in Iraq.

1. More NG from MS are leaving for Iraq any day now
30 of them are from the ranks of the 110 members of the MS highway patrol. MS will miss them since highway deaths are on the increase, and the positions can't be filled while these 30 are gone, not even temporarily because there is no funding.

2. Too many local emergency service folks have been sent
overseas to serve in this stupid war. Just about every department in the state has been affected.

4. Are you in a blue or red state?
The polls show MS is red - it is pathetic - a state that needs the dems more than most. I pray the polls are wrong and that the folks see through the lies. I can only try to enlighten as many as I can until Nov.

5. I thought they were all purple states now?
I'm in Kansas, which is achingly conservative. Painfully so. Ever notice how a conservative area can dull the senses? There's just so much crap to counter that it really would take an total re-education to even begin to undo the damaged thinking...I despair. Always having to begin with the basics just to get at the issue at hand...

But I continue to plod...truddling my way through the mire... hopefully, some along the way listen.

6. LOL - you are right, they are all purple!!!
I also agree with you about dulling the senses. I sat with a repug friend the other night and asked "why do you like *?" The response I got almost knocked me out of my chair...

"Cause he is not smart, he is one of us!"

What horror and the friend could tell on my face my shock and disgust. I calmed myself (since this type of statement is enough to make me a very irrational human being) and I said "but isn't it the most important job in the world and don't you want a brillant man running the office?" Again, the friend's response was mind numbing:

"He has surrounded himself with smart folks cause he knows he is not smart."

As you can guess, the conversation when downhill from there.

On second though, mind numbing is not the proper term, frightening is appropriate!
