Discovery of potential stem cells could help those suffering from diabetes
TORONTO (CP)

A group of Canadian researchers has made a discovery of potential stem cells in the pancreas, a finding that could not only one day lead to new treatments for diabetes but also change the way scientists understand the way cells develop.

The lead scientists of the study have identified individual cells in the adult mouse pancreas that are capable of making insulin-producing "beta cells." These beta cells make up the tissues in the organ that release insulin and help regulate the body's blood sugar levels. ..

The existing "dogma" about cell development says there is a distinct group of cells destined to make the brain and another to make the pancreas, Smukler says. This discovery could change all that, he adds, because it shows that a single cell in the pancreas can make both beta cells and nerve cells.

"It was unexpected and intriguing, and kind of neat," he says. ..

3. Are the Canadians trying to put the
drug Cos. out of business. How many billions would they lose if a cure for diabetes could be solved by stem cells. It is not morality that is preventing bush from letting stem cells research go on. It is the Drug cos. They give big bucks. I am a diabetic and if I didn't have insurance I would be dead now. It costs as bunch of money. I would say at least 250. per month. Needles, Insulin, pills, strips, monitor, stylus and needles. Then your subject to High blood pressure, Cholesterol problems. I hate bush.

6. Um, they are talking about stem cells not
embryonic stem cells. There is no ban on adult stem cell research which are the type of cells the Canadians found in the pancreas. Also, there is no ban on embryonic stem cell research, private companies are free to do all the embryonic stem cell research they want, they just can't use government funding unless they are using one of the 60 lines under which funding is allowed.

Get your argument right or someone might accuse you of being dumber than Bush.

7. Way to Go
Canada has been doing insulin research for a long time.

A Canadian was the first to come up with a method to produce insulin.

Synthetic Insulin (humulin) was one of the first bio-engineered products.

The US, Canada, and Euros have made great advances in eradicating disease, small pox for example. People with the freedom to create can do great things.

I still have hope that there is progress to be made. Regretfully progress will include stem cell work and gene manipulation. These thing create religious opposition and fear from lack of understanding. Genetics is in its infancy and will give us great advances in human health.

9.  I love Canada

they seemed to be doing so many things right. About one month ago I was diagnosed with diabetes. It was just another disease to add to what appears to be a cellular mutiny going on in my body. I do have health insurance now, but it keeps going up and up every year.

Waiting on SSD now. Did I say I love Canada?
