Penelas hoping to regain voters' confidence
Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas, who is third in the polls in the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, is hoping for a decisive surge in the contest's final days.

[email protected]Alex Penelas hopes you haven't been paying attention to the U.S. Senate primary race.He is third in the polls. His campaign commercials finally returned to television one week ago after more than a month off. His latest reported fundraising lagged far behind his rivals'.
Penelas' only chance -- and it is a long shot -- of continuing his 17-year run in public office is that enough voters haven't made up their minds, tuned in to his rivals' commercials or put their checkbooks away.
''People haven't focused on the race yet,'' said Penelas, who remains unflappable even when confronted with the prospect of losing the Aug. 31 Democratic primary. ``Once they have a chance to focus on me, they're going to like what they see.''

But an appealing stump speech might not be able to repair his relationship with the Democratic party, which was strained by the Elián González affair and by Penelas' perceived failure to support Al Gore in the 2000 presidential race.
