Sez Gov lover's his ex

Sources: Prof claims gay affair with Cipel

Embattled New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey attends a homeland security meeting in Trenton yesterday.

The New Jersey gay sex scandal took an explosive new turn as a man claiming to be Golan Cipel's lover came forward and reported the affair to aides of Gov. Jim McGreevey, sources said yesterday.

The mystery man, a college professor from northern Jersey, called the governor's office to assert he and Cipel had been romantically involved, sources said.

If true, the new lover could blow apart Cipel's claims that he is straight and seriously damage Cipel's credibility as a victim of McGreevey's unwanted sexual advances.

7. I dunno...
He's from Israel, right? Maybe he's seen his share of improvised explosive devices and terrorist tactics to make him a pretty good advisor on homeland security.

11. Yeah, that was my first thought too.. But,
since he is unable to get any security clearance, he wouldn't be allowed to SEE any intelligence about those bombers.

Sure, he can revoke it, but he's out anyway.

How many times before people see it? He isn't leaving because he's gay and he isn't leaving because someone is accusing him of harassment.

What's the "scam"? Was he lying and really qualified to be homeland security guru fro the state?

...he showed remarkably poor judgment in his appointment of the totally unqualified Cipel. Enough of this patronage crapola.
Gay American - garbage. Ethically challenged American is more accurate.

I am not so sure how I feel about this whole mess so I will leave it at that.

28. Even if he is a liar and did have a consensual affair with McGreevey,
How is that a good thing? The Governor appointed his lover for an important job (doens't get much more important than anti-terrorism) that he wasn't qualified for. That doesn't seem like good news to me.

19. It Was Indeed, Sir
Right up there with "LaRouche and other leading Democratic figures...."

It is not so much this wretch who is the problem, but those who will breathlessly trip over themselves to circulate the nonsense when it seems to overlap some portion of their predispositions in some matter.

20. Yes, one needs to at least apply Napoleon's dictum,
about not assuming malice where incompetence will do the job,
first. In this case the writer is clearly from the Jerry Springer
school of journalism, and we would all do better to let the
garbage ripen a bit before deciding how it should be disposed of.

That one is mine, and popped out recently in conversation with my daughter. The idea is hardly original, of course, for it is a commonplace that is hard to describe others without describing oneself. 12. I knew that the only reason why Cipel claimed he was straight
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 03:09 PM by rocknation
was to look more plausible as a naive sexual harassment victim.

This IS good news, because it legitimizes McGreevey's claim that their relationship was consensual. More important, it suggests that Cipel can be charged with extortion: he tried to get McGreevey to pay him to not file charges that he KNEW McGreevey wasn't guilty of. I'll bet THAT'S why he took it on the lam to Israel!

13. There are more than this one guy.
A total of three men have come forward to say they've been with Cipel.

Heard this on the morning news in LA.

Does this queen really think that no one is going to come forward?

Please! If one of my ex's pull this "I'm straight" bullshit, I'd be the first to come forward.

Put a cork in it, Golan! You, straight? Please Miss Thang, my gardar was in overdrive the first time I saw your tired ass TV.

Straight? Sure girlfriend, sure.

Woops, there goes my lemonade. You owe me a new keyboard! :)

I'm totally with you. As a woman with a PhD in Fag Haggery, I am wondering just who the hell Cipel is trying to fool with this straight nonsense.

There was a pic in Michael Musto's column (was linked to in a GD thread) of Cipel and McGreevey, and well the only way they would have looked more like a happy couple is if one of them was licking whipped cream off the other.

26. Frankly, I smell a Paula Jones-style setup in this case
IMHO, someone probably got to Cipel, and that someone most likely has an (R) after their name.

Now, remember that one of McGreevey's fundraisers got himself in legal and ethical hot water and has just pled guilty. However, the US Attorney, a Bush appointee, hadn't been able to link McGreevey to the fundraiser's wrongdoing. But, IIRC, McGreevey did manage to get the fundraiser to hire Cipel after he left state government.

So, my eyebrows rose when I saw a report saying that the governor's people claimed that one of Cipel's alleged demands was for McGreevey to certify a medical school that was somehow connected with the fundraiser. (I don't remember the exact connection.) If McGreevey had done so, I'm sure he would've broken some law that's gotta be on the books. After all, he would've been abusing his executive power by certifying a school in order to pay off an extortionist.

Whoever is behind this expected McGreevey to react in one of two ways: 1) give in to Cipel's demands and end up indicted along with the fundraiser, or, more likely, 2) not give in and suffer a bogus Paula Jones-style lawsuit where McGreevey would be under constant pressure from sensationalistic news coverage with all kinds of exaggerations, distortions and outright lies.

I don't think the people behind this ever expected McGreevey to resign and come out of the closet at the same time.

Last Thursday, right after McGreevey's announcement, I predicted that no lawsuit would be filed on Friday, as the media had stated would happen. And right on schedule, not only was no lawsuit filed on Friday, but also Cipel didn't even appear in public. His lawyer released a statement with a few smears, one of which didn't even make sense--McGreevey forced Cipel to let him perform oral sex on Cipel??? Come on, you really expect us to believe that???

Then Cipel gives one interview--to an Israeli paper-- and immediately flees back to Israel, vowing that he'll be back. Nah, he just couldn't stand the heat, so he got out of the kitchen.

I'll make some further predictions:

1. No lawsuit will ever be filed by Cipel against McGreevey.

2. No criminal charges will ever be filed against McGreevey, because a) putting your lover on the state payroll in a job he most likely wasn't qualified for is sleazy, but almost certainly not illegal, b) he most likely had nothing to do with the fundraiser's shenanigans, and c) he did the right thing in rejecting the alleged extortion demands.

Whether we ever find out who really put Cipel up to this is a big question mark. I don't think the Bush-appointed US Attorney really wants to go there, so it would probably take an enterprising and diligent journalist who's not afraid of the Republicans to expose them. Unfortunately, such journalists are rare in today's climate. (Calling Joe Conason!)

Anyway, that's my take on this business. I think the Ken Starr-style goal was to abuse the legal system in order to cause problems for NJ Democrats--and it has done that, though the problems have been minimized by McGreevey's refusal to take the extortionist's bait and by his resignation.
