Brazil's singing minister disowns 'Die, Bush' call
SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters)

Brazil's culture minister and singing superstar Gilberto Gil is not calling for the death of U.S. President George W. Bush, whatever concert-goers might have thought.

Gil, 62, took time off from his government role this weekend to play shows in Sao Paulo, treating fans to many of his own classics as well as songs by Bob Marley and John Lennon.

During "Soy Loco Por Ti America" (I'm Crazy About You, America) -- a song from the 1960s about Latin American dreams of liberation -- the visual display behind the band flashed up an image of the U.S. leader with a noose around his neck and the slogan "Morra, Bush, Morra" (Die, Bush, Die).

It also featured portraits of Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara and Mexican rebel Pancho Villa. ..

1. Well "die bush die" is not cool at all
So I hope that guy disowns that stuff. If he really had nothing to do with the visual display, then he needs to find out who did, and fire that person immediately.

2. Maybe he was singing a spanish translation of German lyrics.
He was actually saying "The Bush, The"

(Twenty points to whoever gets that reference) ;)

You beat me to it.

Another gem from that episode:

4. yeah, "die" is a little extreme
Even though bush has caused thousands upon thousands to die himself.

They could just have said "go away!"

Sorta' like this:

Cher

8. Unbelievably great singer. Spectacular.
Brazil should be so happy to have given the world such a fine talent.

10. And he's the Minister of Culture now! We can thank Lula for this.
If you like Gilberto Gil, you'll also like the other members of the Tropicalia movement like: Tom Zé (my favorite), Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, and Os Mutantes (kinda like the Brazilian Beatles). When I was in Rio last year I went to a João Bosco concert and sitting next to me was Caetano Veloso, who referred to João as THE master. Check 'em out.
