U.S. Proposes Shrimp Tariffs for 4 Nations
The U.S. Department of Commerce said Thursday that exporters from Brazil, Ecuador, India and Thailand have dumped canned and frozen warm water shrimp on the U.S. market at artificially low prices, hurting domestic producers.

The proposed duties were considerably smaller than what the petitioners — Southern shrimpers and processors — had sought. They varied from country to country based on each country's sales and production prices.

I'm sure that the fact that these countries are not in the "Coalition of the Willing" has nothing to do with why they have been singled out for this kind of treatment. :eyes:

2. The other issue...
who would want this shrimp anyway?

"But Southern shrimpers say the problem started in 2001 when Europe and Japan began blocking imports of farm-raised shrimp because of concerns of unhealthy levels of antibiotics."

I'm getting really sick of our government allowing crap in that no other decent government would even consider. The carcinogens in these farmed shrimp are supposed to be at particularly high levels. Not only are our shrimpers getting screwed, but the consumers are too.

7. we need country of origin labeling
It would help if consumers knew where their seafood came from; they could make the better decisions on what to buy. So when you see cheap shrimp at the grocery store, it most likely is imported , farm-raised not wild-caught.

3. Hmm - looks as if Bush is worried about Louisianna - trying to shore
up support there among the watermen and seafood workers.

6. Free trade isn't always a good thing.

That's one of the reasons why companies are out sourcing.

8. When WE sell something overseas, it is free trade ....
When THEY sell something here, we need tariffs to protect our industries.

Unfuckingreal.

9. Yes, this is a very big deal here in Louisiana
It is the first time I have ever heard grumblings about Bush and the Repugs from a usually Conservative group. However, if he tossed this bone, maybe it will restore their faith.

10. There's something "fishy" going on in the shrimp industry
I've read that production on farms in the U.S. had created a domestic glut, but for some reason, the price hasn't come down one bit. Hmmm...
