Former US president Bill Clinton has bought a holiday home at an exclusive Irish golf club, it emerged today.

1. Golfing? In Ireland?
Edited on Thu Jul-10-03 04:28 AM by codeword
The weather is miserable 90% of the time. This "golf club" must be a front for some form of adult entertainment :)

3. But as the Irish say, "'tis a 'soft' day. "
When it rains for brief periods 10 times a day, as it often does, you just have to learn to play in the rain.

4. Americans get taken in by the Irish weather
It is such a welcome change from what a Southerner like Clinton grew up with that he will be charmed for a few months. Then, as my Irish friends say, the gloom will set in. After a while, Big Dog will be in the same boat as everyone else over there: willing to pay millions for eight hours of sunshine!

Ultimately, he'll just have to go down to the local and dry out by a turf fire while he bolsters himself with a pint. He'll not be lacking for conversation, you know.

Oh, to be in Kildare!

5. that he is
I was reading about a golf club and they had a statue of him and some American Business men were real pissed off and they refused to move it. Is this the republic of Ireland? Have fun in Ireland Bill and bring me a Guiness heh.

8. Actually, Opus is Spanish
Opus Dei was founded in Spain a few decades past. The pope recently put its founder (forgetting his name right now) on the path to Catholic sainthood.

11. agh I cant believe the pope did that
You are right it is Spanish my bad and welcome to DU. It had to do with Franco right. Pope John Paul II isnt the best IMO but not the worst the pope during WWII was terrible and the pope after him was great but we only had him for a few years not in my life time anyhow.

17. I think Jose Maria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei, was canonized.
Seriously, I seem to recall that he'd gotten past beatification and was now officially listed as a saint.

That said, it's for GOD to say who the saints are. (And I say that as a Catholic, too! How Protestant of me!)

:-)

13. I love foul weather...
I'm thinking of moving to Seattle. I'd be one of the few people living there who would become far less depressed.

As for Ireland, even when the weather's bad, it looks beautiful. I could understand why the Big Dog would want to move there. It's been said that the typical Irish home has 3 pictures in it, one of the Pope, one of Kennedy and one of Clinton. It must make him proud.

14. Kildare isn't as rainy as the western part of Ireland
Not that any part is what you'd call DRY, mind! And golf is a major, major thing...there are Irish golfing tours galore, if that's what you like, particularly in the Kilkenny area (just south of Kildare).

18. Hey, yourself! Guess what I have?
Airline tickets, a rental car agreement and a condo reservation! 10 days in Ireland with Hubby (no kids!) in mid-August, but over on the rainy side of the island.
Figure I'll kiss the Blarney stone and give it some of its magic back... ;-)

9. He still hasn't forgotten Ireland
Seems he's willing to continue his efforts there only now, instead of investing his diplomatic efforts, he's investing his $$$. Cool.

10. Sad...Even Bill Clinton needs a place to get away from the US and Bush!
But, most of us don't have the ability to have a "hideaway." Sigh......

12. Hey Bill! Invite me!
I'll leave the golf cart at home - I'll pay a caddie! :-) I walk all the time anyway.

I voted for ya twice - invite me! I'd love to see Ireland! :-)

Seriously though, good for him - he worked his ass off, and he's earned whatever he gets.

19. Looks the smirks & jokes about his financial ruin were a bit off
But then hey Repubes never have been good with money.

As a fed up Clinton said in ~'98 "Their numbers haven't been right in ten years".
